The Black Spot is a literary device created by Robert Louis Stevenson for his novel Treasure Island (series 1881-82, published as a book in 1883). In the book, pirates are presented with a "black spot" to formally declare a guilty verdict or judgment. It consists of a piece of paper or a circular card, with one side blackened while the other side bears a message and is placed in the hands of the defendant. It is the source of many fears because it means pirates must be overthrown as leaders, by force if necessary - or kill directly. At Treasure Island , Billy Bones is very frightened of it but remains determined to outwit his enemies; However, he suffered a stroke caused by excessive consumption of booze and death. Later, Long John Silver accepted the place, but was calm enough to notice that the papers inscribed on the place had been removed from the Bible, and warned his colleagues about the bad luck that would befall them.

Origins

The origins of Black Stevenson's Spot may be in the historical tradition of Caribbean pirates showing the Ace of Spades to someone who was cursed as a traitor or informant. The card puts the person dangerously "in place", because the ace has one pip.
