Bunny boots are commonly used nicknames for Extreme Cold Vapor Barrier Boots (Type II) used by the United States armed forces. Roundless liner shoes retain warmth by floating up to one inch of wool and feel the insulation between two rubber layers and are usually worn with one heavy woolen sock. The boots were originally developed at the Navy's Apparel and Textile Research Center in Natick, Massachusetts, USA, for use during the Korean War.
Originally designed for the military, such shoes have become cool weather equipment both in civil works and the recreational environment. Rabbit boots are commonly found in arctic climates such as Alaska.

Description
Type I
The black couple, sometimes called Mickey Mouse shoes, weighs 44 oz. (1.25 kg) each and rated for temperatures up to -20 à ° F (-28.9 à ° C) and made with oil/diesel resistant rubber. They are less common than white couples who give their name boots.
Type II
The white boot is designed for use in extreme cold weather of -65 à ° F (-53,8 à ° C). It's also slightly larger and heavier (~ 8 oz. (0.22 kg) more per boot) than the black boot due to the extra isolation.
Both Mickey Mouse boots and rabbit shoes have air valves in each boots. This air valve should be opened before flying, to ensure that the air pressure difference between the boot wall and the outside air does not cause the shoe to break. A general theory about the origin of the name of rabbit boots is that they make the wearer's foot look disproportionately large, like the Bugs Bunny. Extreme extreme weather boots are actually dubbed after snowshoe rabbits, usually found near Ft. Greely, Alaska. During autumn the rabbit's fur changes color from brown to white, allowing it to blend in with its wintery environment. As winter approaches, more and more rabbits appear with their new "white" shoes. These boots are manufactured by several companies including Bata, Acton and Air Boss.
Both Mickey Mouse boots and rabbit shoes have rubber on the front of the foot and the back of the heel. These locks lock into standard military skiing and snowshoe bindings.
