Histori

Darien Lake Fun Country

In 1954, Darien Lake was dug and filled. The lake is a popular swimming destination for many years. In 1964, investor Paul Snyder bought a 164 acre parcel bordering the lake and opened a small camping and picnic area with 23 locations. Snyder continues to acquire more land which ultimately increases its holdings to nearly 1,000 acres of land including seven lakes, the largest being Darien Lake. He piles up one of the smaller lakes, Trout Pond, with fish, increases the number of campsites and additional activities for resort guests like small zoos, horseback riding and ponies, paddle boats, skateboarding, tennis courts and mini golf.

From the late '70s to early 80s, Snyder added more attractions, including a set of water slides on a hill near the park entrance called Rainbow Mountain, creating an amusement park which he named Darien Lake Fun Country. Snyder made a deal with HUSS Park Attractions, turning Darien Lake into a North American show for a new German manufacturer. Through this deal, the park gets rides like Pirate, Ranger, Thrillbilly, and Corn Poppers, for use in the park and gives HUSS locations to showcase them to potential US and Canadian buyers. In 1982, the newly joined Arrow Huss built and opened the main roller coaster park, Viper.

Funtime Park

In 1983, Snyder sold 50% of the park to Funtime Inc., which also owned Geauga Lake and Wyandot Lake Park. The Fun Country was dropped from its name, and Funtime brought some major improvements.

Funtime's first purchase was the Famous Wheel Ferris Wheel made by Vekoma, the 1982 World Fair exhibition in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the largest in the US at the time, permanently installed in the center of the park. Although it is no longer the largest in the country, the Giant Wheel is still operating today.

Entertainment was also added to the park, with the construction of the Jubilee Peak Theater (now the Grande Theater), the Lake Edge Amphitheater, the large-scale concert stage on the south side of the main lake, featuring big names including The Who, Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath, and Cinema 2000 , a wide-angle movie theater behind the park. In the mid to late 1980s there was Splashmania, a water-ski show located in Fun Lake. Improvements continued throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, with the addition of children's themed areas, Adventure Land for Kids in 1988, and in 1989 Grizzly Run replaced the rising children area where skate parks reside. In 1990, six new slides were added to the rear of the water launch complex and the area was known as Barracuda Bay and additional costs were added to the water park as well as new locker areas, food complexes, shopping areas and dressing rooms. Following the success of the new wooden roller coaster at Geauga Lake in 1988, Funtime contracted Dinn & amp; Summer to build a new wooden coaster for Darien. The Predator Roller coaster opened in May 1990. Around this time, Paul Snyder, who still has a voice in the park operation, sells the rest of his park to Funtime, hands over all control to them.

In 1992, a new entertainment style was demonstrated midway between Barracuda Bay and the Giant Wheel, a laser light show called Laser Light Fantasy (now called Ignite the Night), which included laser charts and fireworks. The show premiered in front of Barracuda Bay in 1992. The show was permanently installed at the Lakeside Amphitheater the following year, while the concert event was moved to the new Darius Performing Arts Center, which can accommodate nearly 4 times as many guests. In 1994, the old Rainbow Mountain water slide was replaced with a new set of water slides, 'Cuda Waterfall' and a water park being included in park passes.

Premier Premier/Six Flags Park

In 1995, a growing regional park chain, the Premier Park, bought Funtime and its three parks. Premier plunges directly into changes and additions. In 1995, Skycoaster opened above Fun Lake. In 1996, Adventure Land was replaced by Popeye Seaport with all the new kiddie rides like the Ferris wheel made to look like a barrel, a hand-driven carriage, a submarine ride, a ship themed venue (erased in 2004), and a food stand and toilet in a new kiddie area in an area occupied by a mini golf course. A new mini golf course opened behind a new kiddie area near the Viper that replaces an old golf course. Also a waterpark expansion with new attractions occurred in 1996 and 1997 with Hook's Lagoon (opened in 1996) the Crocodile Isle wave pool (opened in 1997) took over the old Adventure Land location by Elk Lake with new locker rooms and food stands built, and a bridge was built to connect the slide of Barracuda Bay with a new water park area and a boat tag game added to the middle of the road. The three old Adventure Land rides were moved to another part of the park as the Tiny Trio in 1997.

From 1996 to 1999, Premier will also install a new roller coaster every year, Nightmare at Phantom Cave in 1996, Mind Eraser in 1997, Boomerang: Coast to Coaster in 1998, and Superman Ride of Steel (Intel's first hypercoaster in the world ) in 1999 The nightmare was removed in 1998, and moved to The Great Escape's sister's garden. In 1998, Premier bought Six Flags Theme Parks, and began changing its own garden name to Six Flags. In May 1999, Six Flags Darien Lake opened under a new name, with some major changes. Premier carries his own Six Flags character base, Looney Tunes and DC Comics, into the park, renames Popeye Seaport to Looney Tunes Seaport, adds a show in an empty Nightmare at the Phantom Cave building called Spectacular Thrill Thriller, and Hydro Force, Pipeline Falls , Riptide Run, and Torpedo Rapids were moved from Barracuda Bay and Scrambler to replace Cinema 2000. The mid stage was added to replace the boat tag game and Emporium gift shop opened in Lasso's old location, Crazy Quilt was removed and replaced with Lasso.

2000 brings Premier Park reform, assuming their new name, Six Flags Inc. and a decrease in the addition of new attractions. The next major attraction installed Twister in 2000 and Shipwreck Falls in 2002, replacing the old Cascade Canyon water slide on the east side of Barracuda Bay and Slingshot behind the Cuda Falls waterfall; and Tornado in 2005.

Trouble

2006 is the year of turmoil for Six Flags and its gardens. For the 2006 season, Six Flags moved Big Kahuna, a family-sized water slide, from Six Flags AstroWorld to Darien Lake and also moved the Batman The Escape roller coaster from Astroworld to storage on Darien Lake, with possible plans to build it. They also added the opportunity to meet the entire Justice League in the park.

Just a month into the Darien Lake season, however, Six Flags began pulling back the Justice League from Darien Lake, and announced Darien Lake, along with eight other parks, is being considered for sale. Many parks along the chain, not only for sale, also experience many changes and reductions throughout the summer.

In October 2006, after shortening operating hours and seasons, Six Flags officially announced that the park was offered for sale as a package. Paul Snyder stated in a radio interview that he would consider buying Darien Lake from Six Flags if they allow the park to be sold separately.

In January 2007, Six Flags announced potential sales from seven parks to the new company, PARC 7F (formally called PARC Management). Six Flags chose to maintain two parks that were originally considered for sale.

PARC Management (2007 - 2010)

In April 2007, Six Flags completed the sale of Darien Lake and 6 other parks to PARC Management. Upon completion of the sale, PARC entered into a 50-year contract with CNL Income Properties, where CNL will purchase the property from and lease it back to PARC for the operation.

Due to the final sale time with respect to the park opening, PARC can not make many major changes for the 2007 season. The biggest changes to the season are the addition of a new show, Le Grande Cirque, which replaces Batman Thrill Spectacular, and the elimination of all Six Flags/Looney Tunes/DC Comics related references and references that force the park to bring down Superman. naming of the Ride of Steel and retention of the Looney Tunes Seaport children's area to Adventure Isle.

In January 2008, it was announced that Darien Lake would launch its first roller coaster, Zamperla Motocoaster, in the 2008 season, called Orange County Choppers MotoCoaster. The mounted coaster is a prototype that runs outside the Zamperla plant in Italy. PARC also promises to lower the price of admission to the park which has increased when the park is owned by Six Flags. Also, the operation of Floodgate Water is stopped.

In March 2010, Darien Lake expanded their current water park to Splashtown in Darien Lake. Extending to the parking lot, SplashTown at Darien Lake features several new attractions and a painting of the 'Cuda Falls water slide complex in Barracuda Bay, a new 16 foot (4.9 m) river called Floatation Station, a Swirl City slide complex with four a new slide, and a kiddie wave pool called Lazy Days Lagoon. 2010 also saw some small park changes like the Viper painted with black tracks, the Predator getting a new train, and the addition of Critter Chase at Adventure Isle replacing Raft Adventure.

On November 24, 2010, CNL announced that it had reached an agreement to stop PARC leases from Darien Lake and up to 17 other locations. The move came after, according to their 2010 SEC filing, PARC defaulted on their lease obligations on the property. Five of the original six parks originally purchased from Six Flags are also involved in terminating the lease.

Herschend Family Entertainment (2011 - 2014)

On January 25, 2011 CNL announces Herschend Family Entertainment will assume day-to-day operations and management of Darien Lake and Elitch Gardens. HFE also has Dollywood and two other theme parks. In March 2012, Darien Lake announced the development of Rowdy's Ridge, which included the addition of several family rides where the Tiny Trio is located.

On September 21, 2012, Darien Lake announced major improvements for the 2013 season including Blast Off and Ignite the Night . Blast Off is housed in a newly rethemed Waterfront Boardwalk area, including major renovations for rides like Grand Carousel and Giant Wheel, along with several new dining options. Laserblast received new improvements as well and became Ignite the Night . UFOs have been removed and the Cuda Falls water slide is closed and then removed before the start of the 2014 season. Scrambler travels back after two years in storage.

Premier Park, LLC (2014 - 2018)

On October 26, 2014, Herschend Family Entertainment rental in parks is over and taken over by Premier Parks, LLC.

On February 12, 2015, the plan was revealed to add two new attractions. Rolling Thunder, Larson 22M Giant Loop will be added to the park at the former UFO location. The journey covers a 72-foot, 360-degree circle, and will steer the rider to an upside-down position in both forward and backward movements. Brain Drain consists of two slide bodies in which the rider will be lowered through a trapdoor at high speed.

On February 11, 2016, the park announced plans to add Ripcurl Racer, 6-lane Proslide Kracken Racer.

EPR Property (2017-present)

After the 2016 season, CNL Lifestyle sells Darien Lake and fourteen other theme parks to EPR Properties. The park will continue to be rented and operated by Premier Park, with no expected changes in operations or personnel.

On November 13, 2017, Park announced Tantrum, a Euro-Fighter coaster gerstlauer that will open in 2018.

On May 22, 2018, Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced that it has entered into a purchase agreement with Premier Park to obtain lease rights to operate the park, which will remain under the ownership of the EPR Property.

Entertainment

All show venues listed here are included in the admission price.

Fright Fest

The original Six Flags Fright Fest is an annual event held at the end of the operating season (Weekend in October, usually) from 1998 to 2006, celebrating Halloween. Fright Fest adds a new area to the park (Bloodstone Hollow, haunted graveyard and free town; and Brutal Planet, expensive haunted house) and different shows from the regular season (Feast of the Dead at Grande Theater and Spooktacular Laser at Lakeside Amphitheater.)

When the park was sold to PARC Management in 2007, the event was renamed "Fall Family Fun Fest", adding family-oriented areas such as hay labyrinths and paintings of pumpkins next to haunted houses. During this event, admission to the park is free, at an individual cost for every trip and attraction.

A FrightFest re-branded back in 2008 with elements similar to Six Flags Fright Fest, and additional new elements such as the Fright Night Field Trip, took the bus through a haunted encampment. The Haunted House and Trick or Treat Trail also returned from previous years. FrightFest ends at Darien Lake in 2015, replaced by Harvest Fest.

Harvest Fest

By 2015, Darien Lake replaces their fall event with a family-friendly event called Harvest Fest. Although this idea has been tried before with Fall Family Fun Fest, these rides are included with admission tickets, and lack of focus is placed on frightening attractions. Instead of a haunted ride, a hay and craft ride for the kids is included with the entrance ticket. Food trucks, craft beers, and other vendors are provided to offset the lower staff during offseason. Also, the season schedule is shortened to end in September, not the end of October.
