src: cdn1.medicalnewstoday.com

Black chocolate (also known as dark chocolate or common chocolate ) is a form of chocolate that contains a higher percentage of cocoa solids and cocoa butter than milk chocolate , and little or no dairy products. Government and industry standards on what products can be labeled "dark chocolate" vary by country and market.

Black chocolate contains antioxidants, such as polyphenols, and relatively low sugars. It has a reputation as a healthier alternative to other types of chocolate, such as milk chocolate. Dark chocolate has been identified as a potential "superfood". This has helped lead to an increase in global demand for dark chocolate.

Health Benefits

Most dark chocolates that have more than 70% of cocoa on the market today contain a series of chemicals that interact with cell and tissue components that help protect against the development and effects of certain illnesses and diseases. In cocoa and cocoa products, the flavanols responsible for health benefits are referred to as: monomers, epicatechins, and catechins.

When consuming high levels of cocoa, evidence suggests that flavanols have been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, improve mental cognition, and have also been shown to potentially reduce the risk of diabetes in some people.

Diets rich in antioxidants including foods like chocolate, fruits and vegetables promote better health. They even showed signs of potentially delaying the onset of various diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, certain cancers, and some age-related degenerative disorders.
