" Dark Horse " is a song recorded by American singer Katy Perry featuring rapper Juicy J. It was originally released on September 17, 2013, by Capitol Records as the first promotion of Perry's fourth album, Prism (2013). Three months later, it was released as the third official single on December 17th. The two artists co-wrote the song with their producers Max Martin, Cirkut, and Dr. Luke, with Sarah Hudson. It was conceived by Perry and Hudson during a writing session in Perry's hometown of Santa Barbara, California, and Juicy J was then assigned to a verse on the song.
"Dark Horse" combines the genre of traps and hip hop, replicating what has been described as "Southern rap-techno mashup". The track has a minimal production, with "teasing" and "adult" tones for Perry's vocals, while Juicy J is featured in hacked intros and bridges. Perry, in an interview, said he wanted the song to have "magic, magic-y kinds of black magic ideas", so he wrote it from the perspective of a magician warning a man not to fall in love with him because if he did, he would be the last. The song is part of a Pepsi-sponsored competition in which fans can vote via Twitter on whether they would prefer "Dark Horse" or "Walking on Air" to be released as the first promotional single from Prism .
"Dark Horse" is a commercial success, charting at number one in Canada, the Netherlands and the United States. It also reached the top ten in nearly 20 countries including New Zealand, England, Sweden and Venezuela as well as the Digital Songs chart of Billboard magazine. Billboard identifies the Dark Horse as a musical accumulation on the charts. Perry first performed the song live at iHeartRadio 2013 Music Festival in Las Vegas on September 20, 2013. The first major television show was at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on January 26, 2014. "Dark Horse" was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Performance Group at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. The song has sold 13.2 million units (combined sales and track-equivalent streams), becoming the second best-selling song worldwide for 2014.

Inspired by 1996 film The Craft, Perry and singer-songwriter Sarah Hudson wrote the first version of "Dark Horse" in Perry's hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Perry describes the song as "juxtaposition", as he mixes it, a pop music artist, with an "urban type soundtrack of a hip-hop-sense background"; and his lyrics as "witchy and dark", written from the point of view of "warning witch [a] not to fall in love with [him]", and if so, he will be the last for him. Perry then asked the producer. Luke to contact one of his Kemosabe Records artists, American rapper Juicy J, as guest poet. Juicy J praised Perry for having a "very professional" work ethic and was substantially involved in song development. He said: "My verse I did on the song, he sings it.He is really genius, he is on the mixing board and tells the person what he should take and take. He's really involved with his music, he knows music. "
"Dark Horse" was recorded and engineered at Luke's at Boo in Malibu, Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, Playback Recording Studios in Santa Barbara, California, and Secret Garden Studios in Montecito, and MXM Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. It was engineered by Peter Carlsson, Mike "Crazy Mike" Foster, Clint Gibbs, Sam Holland, and Michael Ilbert. They were helped by Eric Eylands, Rachael Findlen, Justin Fox, Elliot Lanam, and Cory Bice. It was mixed by Serban Ghenea, while John Hanes served as an engineer for the mix. All instrumentation and programming is done by Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Cirkut.
In a press release on August 20, 2013, Pepsi announced a partnership with Perry to promote his fourth studio album Prism: a social tweet-to-unlock voting program, encouraging fans to tweet KATYNOW #hashhtags instead of titles and song lyrics. The tracks selected for the campaign are "Walking on Air" and "Dark Horse". Once the samples are revealed, fans can choose which ones they want to have an initial release on the digital retailer. The winner is "Dark Horse", which was released on September 17, 2013 at the iTunes Store. Due to its commercial success, it was sent to contest radio stations and rhythmic contests on December 17, 2013 as the third official single Prism '.

Composition
"Dark Horse" has been described as "Southern rap-techno mashup", combining traps and hip hop, and has a length of three minutes and thirty-five seconds. Musically, the poems were built around a cold rhythm and vocal samples were chopped and destroyed, while the chorus features' Perry singing gradually. This song contains a "very unusual" gloomy production. According to Kathy Iandoli of MSN Entertainment, "Dark Horse" contains a mixture of elements of "trippy pop", EDM, and dubstep. According to music sheets published on Musicnotes.com, "Dark Horse" is written in the key B ? minor. This follows the G chord? - D ? - B ? m - B ? m/A ? , and the vowel range from the low note B ? 3 to high notes D ? 5 . "Dark Horse" has a tempo of 132 beats per minute in a typical half-time style of musical traps.
A writer for Winnipeg Free Press described the song as "musing, trapping the amazing feast that appears like a stripped" ET "version blended with" Grindin '"by The Clipse," before proceeding to call it unpredictable, unconventional, and unstoppable.
Critical reception
Marc Hogan from Spin calls the lyrics "clichà © à © salad" but believes that the song is potentially a hit because of its "soaring hook" and "sculpted production". Reviewing the song for Billboard , Jason Lipshutz says that by exploring trap-affected music, Perry "scores [d]" and "kill [ed]". Digital Knight Robert Copsey questioned the decision not to have the right chorus in "Dark Horse" and the entry of Juicy J, although he praised the "rotten" and "sultry" vocals of Katy Perry. He rated four stars out of five stars. Contributor Dylan Mial of Blogcritics says Perry's vocal "juxtaposition" and rap Juicy J brings "material for a perfect music storm" and supports Perry for the "uniqueness" of the single.
Keith Murphy of Vibe calls the song "very sexy", while John Walker of MTV is equally positive about the song, although he writes that Juicy's verse is "on the phone". Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine likened the song to the Art of Noise's "Moments In Love" avant-garde band and called it "continuation" of "ET", and subsequently labeled it as "prominent" from Prisma . Although he did not give his opinion on the song as a whole, Helen Brown from The Daily Telegraph publication criticized Juicy J for his rap "sign". For AbsolutePunk, Craig Manning classifies "Dark Horse" as Prism ' s worst song, while also earning the rapper's contribution. Angry Eakin from The A.V. Club was not entirely critical of the song, although he noted that it was not one of "Perry's best".
The sound consequences of Chris Bosman have a mixed response - while he praises the song for feeling "vital" and "moving forward", he criticizes guest vocals and nonetheless regards the effect of the trap "trap for soccer mothers". Writing for ABC News, Mesfin Fekadu commented that "his team fare [d] better" in the song and observed that "Hip hop and southern flavor electronics" present on it is the factor that makes it "work". Pop music website Idolator Sam Lansky argues that the "weird traps" of the song "never really fused". The song was nominated for Best Song at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards, despite losing to Ariana Grande's "Problems". Has been nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

Music video
Background and production
In an interview with Billboard at the 2014 Grammy Awards, Juicy J declared the video to be filmed "soon"; he added that it was "a great movie." He further teases the release by saying, "I can not really tell you because it will surely be a surprise, but I'll tell you this much: you've seen another video, this one will be as big as everything.. "
When "Dark Horse" reached the top spot on the Hot 100 US Billboard Billboard, Perry announced he was working on a video. "On February 6, 2014, Perry tweeted the video to be released" soon. "On February 13, 2014, he released a music video preview to his Vevo account on YouTube, revealing Egyptian settings from the video Perry plays a character named" Katy PÃÆ'ätra ", taking off on the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. The video was released on February 20, 2014.
The music video was directed by Mathew Cullen, who previously worked with Perry in his music video for the song "California Gurls". Perry's idea of ââa music video is to combine Ancient Egyptian culture with Memphis, Tennessee hip hop: video arrangement in ancient Memphis, Egypt as a nod to the home town of Tennessee Juicy J. Speaking of Perry's concept, Cullen says "That's music in my ear - when a artists have some concepts they want to destroy to create something fresh. "
Synopsis
During the opening of the video, it was revealed that the music video took place "old crazy" in Memphis, Egypt. For the opening verses, Perry's character Katy PÃÆ'ätra, the Memphis wizard, is shown wearing a white dress and white and blue wig as it floats on a large barge at sunset, with pyramids and palm trees visible in the background. Transition video to a different scene where PÃÆ'ätra, now wearing longer dresses and black wigs, sits on a magnificent throne like the Sphinx while the pharaohs gather to carry expensive gifts (such as large diamonds) in an attempt to "win his heart."
After taking the first applicant's prize, he hit the man with a magical lightning strike from his hand, turning it into a pile of sand, and taking the gems to wear on his teeth as a grill. Other applicants bring sweets, cupcakes, twinkies, and spicy cheese puffs. After he burned his mouth with a spicy cheese puff, he turned the applicant into a large cup of water, which he drank. PÃÆ'ätra also appears as a gray statue in scenes where golden snakes and gray guard statues like Anubis, Horus, Nisroch and Apep surround it, and in a scene with a blue background where he wears a gold dress and some gold hieroglyphs hovering around it.
During J's juicy verse, the rapper emerges from a gold sarcophagus while PÃÆ'ätra receives an Egyptian train with hydraulics (he changes the applicant into a set of giant dice to hang from the frame) and rejects an applicant who turns out to have a crocodile face by turning it into a wallet. During the last choir, the last applicant brought PÃÆ'ätra a large golden pyramid with a pink cornucopia, which he climbed. At the top of the pyramid, PÃÆ'ätra, dressed as Isis, uses its power to create magical magic storms with pink, purple, and purple clouds. Although it seems that PÃÆ'ätra has finally found a gift that he loves, the final frame of the video reveals that he has turned the last applicant into a dog with a human head.
Reception
The music video was criticized by some for adapting Egyptian cultural symbols and images. Cullen, the director, defended the music video, saying that, while he believes it is dangerous to tear something straight from the culture without adding anything to them, Ancient Egypt is part of what he calls our collective "collective mythology". He said: "The most important thing is when you make something, and this is actually something that I and Katy are working on - you bring a new spin to it." Egyptologist David P. Silverman praised the use of music videos from Egyptian imagery and interest that can be generated for viewers: "[Egypt has] always been a part of popular culture. This encourages people to think about these things, and some of them actually start learned a lot. "The video is noted by conspiracy theorists as having similarities to the image used by the alleged Illuminati, but Ritner rejects the accusation, saying that" much discussion about the Illuminati is nonsense "and that, in fact, dealing with the Illuminati is taken from the image of Egypt (as a common source for both).
On June 9, 2015, the music video for "Dark Horse" became the first video by a female artist to reach 1 billion views on Vevo. Perry also became the first woman to have videos on YouTube with 1 billion views. As of June 2018, the video has received more than 2.3 billion views on YouTube, making it the 14th most viewed video of all time.
Allegations of religious blasphemy
The music video caused controversy among some Muslims who criticized a scene in the video where a man dressed in a pendant appeared to display the Arabic word for "Allah" to have been destroyed and turned into sand by Perry's character. The scene lasts 1 minute and 15 seconds into the video. The petition launched at Change.org accused Perry of "representing God's opposition" and demanded that the video be removed from YouTube. The petition reached more than 65,000 signatures and in response, the pendant was digitally removed from the video on February 26, 2014, after the petition was closed.
Copyright infringement violations â ⬠<â â¬
On July 1, 2014, St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that rapper Christian Flame and others filed suit against Perry, Capitol Records, and co-author Perry for infringing copyright on the song "Joyful Noise", which appeared on the album 2008 Our World: Redeemed . Flame's DJ, Cho'zyn Boy, states that Perry's song is "identical" with "Joyful Noise", but ten BPM are slower in tempo and one step higher on the field. In addition to the claim of infringement, the lawsuit claims that "by any measure, a religious message filled with deeds about" Happy Voice "has been corrected because of its relationship to magic, paganism, black magic, and Illuminati illumination caused by the same music in 'Black Horse '". Rapper Lecrae, shown on the song and mentioned in the lawsuit, clarified to MTV that "I was in Hong Kong [when] the press release came out and it was not my song - it was my Flame man song and I respect all intellectual property people - but the statement about magic and things, that's not my statement and I do not support that statement. "
