X-Man is an alternate version of the ordinary Marvel Universe hero cables, derived from the reality of "Age of Apocalypse" (Earth-295). He is the biological son of Scott Schmiddy and Jean Gray, born of a genetic disorder. Sinister. His first name comes from the creator; Mr. Sinister's real name: Nathaniel Essex, and his last name from his genetic mother Jean Gray. Unable to be infected by a techno-organic virus such as Cable, Nate gained great telepathic and teleconetic power (reflecting that Cable will have no virus) and is one of the most powerful mutants that existed during its lifetime.
X-Man originally was a fifty mini-series that replaced Cable during the "Age of Apocalypse" reality storyline in 1995. However, Marvel transported Nate Gray into the universe together regular after the storyline ends. The series runs until 2001, where Nate struggles to be the most powerful man in a strange world. The series ended with his apparently sacrificial death.
Despite its name, X-Man only briefly becomes a member of X-Men, both in the reality of the Doomsday and in ordinary reality. Originally, the character was referred only to its original name, both in the Age of Apocalypse and the main Marvel universe. Shortly before the Onslaught crossover event, Nate began sporadically referred to as X-Man, with no explanation for the origin of the code name.

Fictional character biography
Age of Apocalypse
In a parallel reality known as "The Age of Apocalypse", Mr. Sinister, one of the Elite Horsemen of the High Lord Apocalypse, artificially created Nate (named him Nathaniel Gray), from the genetic material of Cyclops and Phoenix. Sinister creates Nate as the main mutant and hopes to use him in his own efforts to fight Apocalypse.
However, Cyclops, in many of its subversive attacks at the Sinister cage, helped Nate escape from Sinister's hideout, without knowing their relationship with others. Somehow, Nate ended up under the guidance of Forge and several other mutant exiles. Forge began the long process of teaching Nate how to control his strength as well as the benefits of being a "good person". Nate also began to see the horror of the Apocalypse world directly, and was determined to drop it.
The Sinister Group infiltrated Forge disguised as an Essex traveler to keep up with Nate, and eventually kill Brute and Forge. Nate battled Sinister to avenge Forge's death. During the conflict, Sinister allows Nate to read his mind, reveal the origin of Nate, and his final destiny defeats Apocalypse. Sinister emerges from a seriously wounded fight, and Nate goes to the Apocalypse battle. The special slugfest happened at a time when alternative X-Men started their final step - defeating this reality with M'Kraan crystal.
The Holocaust interrupts Nate's battle with the Apocalypse as the X-Men plan succeeds and Age of Apocalypse drifts away. In response, angry Nate stabs the Holocaust with M'Kraan crystal fragments, with unexpected results - both disappearing without a trace.
New World
The consequences of the action were unexpected and far-reaching, as both Nate and the Holocaust were both transported to the real reality when it reaffirmed itself. Nate arrived in Switzerland, and was approached by Madelyne Pryor who was very alive but amnesis. Madelyne helped Nate adjust to this fact, but they were separated soon afterwards by Selene. Nate wanders to Earth alone, facing many people who want to use his power or really want to help him - Dark Beast, Sugar Man, Professor X, Cable, Exodus, Moira MacTaggart, Rogue, Mr. Sinister --- only for Nate to have a suspicious nature to encourage him to drive them away. During this time, he inadvertently contributed to the Onslaught manifestation: Nate felt the astral form of Xavier spying on him, and dragged him into the real world. This achievement inspired the aspect of Onslaught in Xavier's mind to create a psychic body for himself, which resulted in Onslaught manifesting an independent body.
Finally, Nate meets Threnody, one of Sinister's subordinates seeking freedom. After rescuing him from the Robbers, the couple form a mutually beneficial partnership: Nate provides protection, while Threnody acts as his guide to the world. They were briefly separated during the events set into motion by Onslaught, but soon reunited and took refuge in New York after his defeat. Their relationship deepened despite Nate's remaining doubt on his relationship with Sinister, but Threnody finally left, unwilling to answer questions about his past.
Believing the Threnody would die, Nate picked up a company if tentatively friendship with Spider-Man. Nate is then attacked by Morbius the Living Vampire, who is attracted to Threnody through his strong attachment to him in the blood of Nate. Due to his own mutant charge of death, Threnody was attracted to Morbius as well, but Nate and Spider-Man intervened. Nate challenges Threnody to come back to him after he gives up to steal life from others and leave it behind. He soon discovered Madelyne passed out in Switzerland. The reunion was disrupted by Jean Gray, who was warned to Madelyne's return by Madame Sanctity. Nate was shocked, first when Madelyne immediately started trying to kill their visitors, and again when she saw that the two women were really twins. Madelyne assumed Nate would side with Jean and attack them both.
Nate instinctively helped Jean, and together they were able to penetrate Madelyne's mind, in the process revealing that Nate was responsible for her resurrection. In his confusion, after the crash landed in Switzerland, Nate unknowingly arouses Madelyne Pryor in his unconscious attempt to reach out to his "mother". Nate sadly tries to undo his mistake, but Madelyne refuses to die again. He restores the power Nate used to turn and run away. Nate refuses Jean's offer to contact X-Men, but later discovers that his telekinesis is missing. Nate visits Moira MacTaggert for answers, which he gives: Nate's telekinetic still exists, but his own body presses them. Havok shows up when Nate leaves, and invites him to join the Brotherhood of Mutants.
Nate helped the Brothers release Aurora, a former member of Alpha Flight, from Department H. Havok helped Nate restore his telekinesis to the point where he could fly again through the meditation room. Nate then finds the operation to free Aurora has a second goal: to get the Coldsnap-9 tube, the lethal gas. Worse, Nate learned that the Dark Beast is a member of the Brotherhood. Nate tried to separate the Aurora from the Brotherhood, but quickly learned that as his personality shifted he needed treatment that the Dark Beast could provide. However, Nate refuses to leave the gas in the hands of the Ikhwan, and opens all the tubes, exposing himself to the gas.
Nate survives because of his telekinetic return at its peak, but collapsed from exhaustion in New York, where he was found and nurtured by three mysterious girls named Jam (Jasmine Archer), Marita, and Bux. Soon afterwards, Nate was telepathically warned by Cable that he was the only one close enough to protect the children of Jean's sister Sara Gray from the Main Sentinel of Operations: Zero Tolerance. Nate rescues the children despite his weakened state, leaving Joey and Gailyn in the care of their grandparents.
Nate's time in New York was marked by endless conflict and unbridled power. He was attacked by Jackknife's psychotic killer, the rest of Abomanasi's followers. Nate unknowingly unlocks Jackknife's latent potential in the past, and although Jackknife is proven immune to Nate's abilities, Nate succeeds in defeating him, getting the help of many people watching the battle. The next day, Jam lost his arm in a motorcycle accident, but was mysteriously healed by a doctor who had made contact with Nate. The magic increases Nate's popularity even more, and he is admired by hundreds of followers. Nate blocked the terrorist attack, but when life was still missing, his admirers turned it on. Nate learns that the person responsible for Jam's accident, and also quickly ups and downs of fame, is the Purple Man, who has controlled Nate and the citizens with his pheromones.
The Purple Man hopes to turn Nate into a modern messiah and use his power to change reality. The plan backfired: Nate refused to be controlled, and after learning that Jam's healed arm was only a strong psionic projection, he lost confidence in himself. In desperation, Nate tried to erase all his memories from New York's mind. Spider-Man intervenes, pleading with Nate not to. Both came to blows, but were attacked by Psi-Ops, a mysterious team of armored psi-talents trying to capture Nate. Nate and Spider-Man defeat them, saving bridges full of people in the process, but are still blamed for the whole mess. Nate was still plagued by self-doubt when Madelyne Pryor returned to him.
After they move to Canada, the new Madelyne seems intent on forcing Nate to admit he needs it. Nate refuses, and is distracted by the dreadful vision of his end: fighting with a masked madman in a pyramid, a stranger seeing from the shadows as Nate and half the world are overwhelmed by the explosion of his power. This caused him to unleash a massive explosion of force in the real world, which awakened three Great Beasts: Tundra, Kolomaq, and Somon. Nate destroys the Tundra, and launches Kolomaq and Somon into space to prevent them destroying the nearby town. Madelyne refuses to play the heroic role and helps Nate fight, but returns to move her back to Switzerland.
While recovering in Madelyne's care, Nate realized that Threnody's mutant strength might not only allow him to escape from death, but also to exhaust his powers, keeping him at a manageable level. She searched for him on the plane, but Madelyne was jealous. Nate's efforts were disrupted when the psi-plane destroyed him, snatching him and Madelyne both from their telepathy.
Nate and Madelyne protect the city of Clifden from several disasters, which are ultimately tied to gnome-technology. During this time they meet and are constantly overshadowed by Ness, a member of the secret hybrid human race/demon, Hellbent, who also has a vision that Nate will soon be responsible for the destruction of the planet. They travel to Dublin, where a series of murders have made the victims burn to their bones. Nate detected a sign of AOA energy on the corpse, and found that Nemesis was responsible. With the help of Madelyne, Nemesis's armor explodes, leaving her to flee in human form.
Nate later learned that Blaquesmith had sent him a vision as a warning, and the technicians as a test, to prepare Nate for the future he had to avoid by all means (just as Ness was looking to prevent it). He transports Nate and Madelyne to Latveria for a confrontation with the resurrected Stryfe, the evil clone of Cable and thus again the brother/associate of Nate, during the "Blood Brothers" crossover. Stryfe uses the power of Doom to suck to drain Nate's immense strength into himself, but with the help of Cable and Madelyne, he is defeated. He reveals that it is Stryfe (a masked madman of Nate's vision) and not Nate, who will be in charge of the end of the world.
Nate also continues to be hunted by Operation: Gauntlet, the United Nations special task force, specifically ordered to target and destroy it in particular, as the greatest potential threat to all life on Earth. During their last confrontation in Ireland, Ness was killed and Madelyne was thought to have died as well. However, he only exhausts his life energy during intense battles until he is physically very old, and secretly chooses to leave Nate instead of letting him see it under such conditions.
Nate went on to have an additional rematch with his fellow AoA refugee Dark Beast (who re-worked with Gene Nation against Nate, who worked briefly with Generation X), Sugar Man and Holocaust (now calling himself Nemesis).
Nate visited "the old man," Scott and Jean, who at that time recovered in Alaska. The strength of the newly faked bond between Nate and his "parents" is shown when, soon after, when X-Men has broken up, Nate (along with Archangel, Wolverine and Cable) is one of the few people called Jean and Scott to help, they need to retain the new race of "Mannite" from the mysterious "Death". After meeting the Fantastic Four, Nate will then be captured by an evil Caliban, on the orders of Apocalypse who plans to use Nate as the new host-body for his soul, during "Twelve Saga". However, Cyclops ultimately sacrificed himself instead, replacing his "son", an act that would ultimately have much significant impact in the future for the rest of X-Men.
Nate also reunited with Threnody, who expressed the state of their separation (especially, that Madelyne had killed him), which Nate did not know until then. However, during their separate time, Threnody has fully evolved into the goddess of mutants, constantly pursued by "zomboids", and without a desire to reform despite Nate's dedication to save him. They parted ways forever, and though Threnody was revealed to have given birth to a terrible baby, his father's identity remained unknown.
Shaman to the Mutant Tribe
Madelyne Pryor finally returns some time later, but she manipulates Nate in her sleep and makes her smash things. He finally reveals that he is a Madelyne from another dimension, who has killed the real Madelyne shortly after his last encounter with Nate in Ireland. The alternative-Madelyne needed Nate to do something for her and show her how to shift between parallel earth or alternative reality, and she told Nate to take them to the alternative reality from where she came from. He wanted to use Nate's great power to help him rule the Earth. Nate rejects it, and is found by the reality version of reality itself, which is a corrupted version of Nate Gray (which means he can never reach his full potential in power) and is a bit crazy from his experience; he also thinks of himself as a shaman for the people on Earth. Nate read his alternative mind to learn the ins and outs of alternative reality.
Nate also learned how Madelyne would take every Nate Gray from these alternative realities hoping to find the "fully functional" used as a weapon to govern. He also showed Nate how to talk to a dead person so they could get information from him about Madelyne; the person who died was the Forge of that reality, which was Madelyne's lover at the time. Forge reveals that Madelyne is really an evil Jean Gray from another parallel Earth and is a con artist who plays Madelyne who once dominated the world. The fact that Madelyne really died, but said she would come back again. Forge also tells them how this alternative Jean Gray has used it to make it a machine so he can travel from parallel to parallel worlds. At this point, they were attacked by Madelyne's personal bodyguard, Mr. Scratch and in the process, combining parts of themselves to throw them away. Mr. mutant strength Scratch is that no other mutant forces have any effect on him, so Nates must completely change his characteristics to fool him.
After the merger, only one Nate remained, so Mr. Scratch incapacitated him and brought him back to Madelyne, who quickly realized that Mr. Scratch has the wrong Nate. The damaged version of Nate told Madelyne that she sent Nate to a place she would never find. He kills the damaged Nate and starts to turn on his parallel world device to find Nate again, but Nate returns and ends his day conquering the world. As a result of the merger of two Nates, a black x-shaped tattoo appears on Nate's chest to act as a genetic brand - forwarded to him from his substitute version - which prevents his powers of killing him because they have been threatened. do from scratch.
After this evil defeat of "Queen Jean", Nate set out to make a difference in the world and regarded himself as Shaman Mutant, a teaching he embraced from his own substitute version. Nate becomes very strong, and has little doubt about using his power to give justice to his mutant mutants. He then handles and stops the Qabiri crazy from destroying all the alternate earths in Spiral of Earths. Qabiri is a creature from a far-off alternative Earth, he wants to destroy every earth beneath it in the Earth Spiral because he fears someone from this lower earth will one day invade the earth and ruin it. Qabiri managed to destroy some alternative earths before Nate could stop him.
Finally, he confronts the Anti-Man, the alien sent to Earth to manipulate his genetic code to all the living cells of the planet so that his people can harvest the energy produced. To save the world from destruction, Nate joined the Anti-Man, essentially "poisoning" the cells of Earth with his presence, and throwing them both around the world.
Dark Beast commented that the strange circumstances of X-Man's death would theoretically allow him to live again.
Back
Nate reappears in a small town, where his presence causes some residents to dreamwalk and constantly repeats "I'm an X-Man." Norman Osborn sent his X-Men team, which consists of Mimic, Weapon Omega, Dark Beast and Mystique, to investigate and improve public opinion.
When Norman X-Men investigates, both Mimic and Omega are overwhelmed with Nate's energy and goes on a rampage leaving Mystique and Dark Beast alone with the patients they are examining. Soon Nate once again takes physical form, much to the surprise and horror of Beast, trusting Mystique to be his mother Jean Gray, as he has taken his form.
Nate angrily attacks Beast but does not realize that Jean is actually a Mystique who managed to distract him long enough to save the life of the Dark Beast. Following the incident Osborn commissioned X-Men to hunt down and possibly catch Nate for his experiments and feed the Weapon Omega. To do that Osborn's X-Men went to the PSI-H.A.M.MEER division, which had taken a cult like appearance. The PSI Division managed to contact Nate just for him to absorb most of their psychic energy and to learn what has happened to the world and the mutant race in his absence. He angrily demands to know what Osborn's X-Men might do.
Nate finally managed to manifest and confront Norman X-Men. He sent Sentry by telling them about their past, something he claimed to be the truth, which sent Sentry disturbed so he retreated to consider this. The other members of the Norman team are also no better. Only Ares is a threat. Since Ares is a personification of War, Nate can not see the future or possibilities that do not include Ares who fought him. Mimik, still confused by the vision he saw, tried to learn more. He dragged Nate into another field of existence. After a brief conversation they are once again confronted by Ares, who has followed them and is very happy to have an opponent like Nate. Ares finally defeats Nate and while Norman tries to confirm Nate's death, a flash of light hits them all again leaving the empty room and Nate's body is gone.
Unknown to X-Men Dark, Nate has had Norman's body, something that only Mystique notices. After trying and failing to persuade Nate to remove technology in his rigged body to explode if he betrayed Norman, he recruited the remaining Dark X-Men to attack Norman's mind and to confront X-Man. While Nate and Norman were involved in the battle of Norman's will babble that he and Nate were in balance. But Nate revealed that this was his plan all along, and that while he and Norman were deadlocked, his X-Men were free to roam the deepest niches of Norman's mind. They did so and by doing so they opened up the personality of the Green Goblin Norman who gladly declared it would kill them all.
After a brief battle between Green Goblin and Dark X-Men in Osborn's mind, Nate was defeated when Green Goblin forced Mimic to replicate Omega's power, turning the pair into a powerful siphon that drained Nate's energy. Now back to the physical world, the helpless Nate was tortured in front of the Dark X-Men as an example for them. Norman asked him if he had the last words before he was "used as coal" in the Omega Dark Beast Machine, but the grim Norman cut off Nate before he had a chance to finish speaking. Nate was taken to the machine, though fate was not finally shown.
Rescue Mission
Learning that Nate Gray had returned to life, Cyclops reorganized the New Mutant list under the leadership of Danielle Moonstar and told them to find Nate and bring him home. Nate is found at H.A.M.MEE.R. facilities in the sadistic scheme of Sugar Man. Sugar Man has Nate connected to Omega Machine, a device built by Norman Osborn to open the portal to another reality, hoping that he will open the portal to the Sugar Man home reality. Realizing that the only way Sugar Man will leave him alone is giving him what he wants, Nate uses all his strength and determination to open the portal to his home reality, but before Sugar Man can escape into it, he is defeated by the New Mutants and will be taken to prisoner by Captain Steve Rogers.
Nate was taken to Utopia, where he revealed that he burned most of his power as he opened the Sugar Man portal, and the only remaining force was telekinesis. Cyclops then welcomes Nate to Utopia, hoping he'll make it his new home.
Fear Self
Spending most of his time in the Utopia danger room, Nate tested his new limits and quickly realized how diminished his telekinesis was. Seeing Nate as a younger version of his father, Cable, Hope Summers was very interested in Nate and watched his frustration grow. He stepped in and offered to teach Nate, what Cable taught: how to get past without power. Nate is happy to accept and the two begin to practice regularly together. May feel indebted to them to save them, Nate joins the Moonstar team without being asked. Despite his insecurity with his diminished power, he begins to use his telekinesis more effectively after taking Sunspot's suggestion to visualize symbols. After an accidental side trip to Hell, the team travels to Hel Nordic to help the goddess Hela fight the wolf soldier soldiers. Nate's memory of the Doomsday plays an important role in victory and he continues to learn how to overcome his diminished power.
Skisma
After an explosive argument about the way the younger generation of mutants treated, Wolverine decided to split from Cyclops and reopen school in Westchester. Agreeing with the idea that X-Men should not care about protecting children from the harsh reality of life and wanting to get to know Cyclops better, Nate wants to stay by his side. At the same time, Nate used to be independent and decided to join the Dani team when they moved to a home in San Francisco where they would keep reporting to Cyclops but trying to lead a normal life, as well as helping the team find Clarice Fergison. They join him on his mission to discover why rock bands cause natural disasters. After their adventure, Blink decided to go to Jean Gray School to learn more about his strength.
Re-Animator
After experiencing a series of nightmares, Doug Ramsey convinced the team to visit Paradise Island, the place where he once died. Tension raged when Nate began to question Doug's mental stability that caused Dani to insult Nate's low telekinesis. While Nate admits that he can still take with telekinesis what he can lift physically, he then shows a new method of telekinetic attack when the team is attacked by Ani-Mates on the island. By focusing his telekinesis on the form of X, Nate was able to target his strength more precisely. The trip proved useful when they discovered the plot by Ani-Mator to return to life in the form of a virus. Infected by a virus and fused together, Nate and Dani's fever began to recognize their interest in each other.
Ani-Mator is defeated but a terrible mission carries a burden for the team. Realizing the gloomy atmosphere, X-Men ally Blink invites the team to spend the night at Madripoor. While the rest of the team feasted, Nate floated on his own, unsure how to act in such a jovial mood. Dani reaches out to comfort her and both end up expressing their feelings for each other with an intimate kiss.
Exiled
Nate's mutant ability began to increase. He mastered the technique of X-shaped telekinetika and even managed to use telepathy in small doses. The New Mutant and Asgard's gods soon come into conflict when the "First Heroes" comes back and is pursued by Disir vampires. When the Sigurd spell transforms the Asgardians into humans and erases their memories, it is up to the New Mutant team and Kid Loki to save the day. Danielle Moonstar travels to Hel to retrieve the Drill, Father Odin to free Disir from his curse. Eventually the truth behind Disir was revealed and Hela acquired a brave new ally.
His knowledge and familiarity about the alternative universe became useful when the New Mutants found themselves in one created by future megalomaniac versions of Doug Ramsey. When X-Men and Avengers went to war on how to handle the Phoenix Force, Nate fought valiantly on the front lines; first to protect Hope Summers and then defend the Cyclops utopian rule. When Cyclops became corrupt because of the Phoenix Force, his leadership ended in disastrous and Dani's team went their separate ways. When Moonstar joins the superhero team, Defender, Nate stays close to him and the couple finally confirms the status of their relationship when they awkwardly run into the fire of former Dani, Cannonball.
The current existence of Nate Gray is unclear, but Matthew Rosenberg has confirmed that he is traveling to Europe on a soul-searching journey in response to fan comments on Twitter. He then went on to admit that his earlier remarks were a joke and since then said that Nate was a mystery, he "disappeared, maybe he'll come back sometime?"
Strength and ability
Originally designed so that his strength will eventually kill him, Nate is an Omega-level mutant that has the ability to tap into the enormous psychic resources of the astral plane to manipulate matter and energy on a large scale until its power is burned by the Omega Machine. The Omega machine, designed by Dark Beast, greatly underestimated Nate's remarkable psychic powers including telepathy, precognition, and telekinesis.
He can use telepathy to read and control many thoughts at once and even read the remaining traces of thought left on the object touched by the person (psychometric), communicating with others by broadcasting his thoughts, creating illusions by changing the perceptions of others, firing off psionic explosions that can randomize the thought process of the opponent (causing the victim either great pain, or making them unconscious), project his thoughts into the astral plane and even pull the astral projection of other telepaths into the physical world, and feel the split dimension or anomaly. He even used a photoelectric photo transmission of Shi'ite holograms to portally connect his mind to Lilandra through unknown interstellar distance.
His telekinesis was so strong that he could move large objects with his mind, the explosion of fire of psychokinetic energy that could destroy steel, creating mental barriers that could stop most of the attacks, hovering his body, and flying at supersonic speeds. He was strong enough to single-handly defeat the Tundra of the Great Animals and was even able to partially isolate the planet's gravitational pull on two other Great Animals, Lolomaq and Somon. He also destroyed the entire city of San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador while asleep in Buenos Aires, Argentina over 2600 miles away.
The control over his telekinesis is so acute that he is able to create holograms by manipulating water molecules and dust mentally to refract light, bend the safety laser to avoid detection, and even move the atoms of the wall around his form so that it passes through the wall like a ghost. He can also use his telekinesis to deflect Earth's magnetic field and create electromagnetic pulses. His telekinesis extends to at least one molecular level, and he can inspire himself with the super human physical attributes by focusing his telekinesis inward.
After the brief return of his dimensional journey that equips him with a special genetic damper which will ultimately prevent his power from killing him, Nate presents further abilities, including the power to see and traverse the higher realms of existence, to reconstitute his body from the astral. energy in the same way as Onslaught and turning his physical body back into astral energy. Though not a real teleporter, he can then traverse alternative realities by breaking barriers between the universe and once 'teleporting' some people across alternative versions of New York to other dimensions. Because he was able to connect any point in one dimension to any point in the current dimension, he could theoretically use this to traverse large interstellar distances by traveling back and forth.
The alternative version of Jean Gray, "Queen Jean" describes Nate Gray as the highest telekinetic with the statement: "This is what all Nate Grays have been on every earth".
After being examined by Moira MacTaggert, he advised his pantheon to rival an army-inspired Jean Gray. In another example, it was measured to have a pureik energy output corresponding to the Dark Phoenix.
However, Nate lost most of his strength after using almost all of his strength and will to open the portal to the Sugar Man home reality, a process that gave him acute nerve damage, which effectively burns off his set of forces. Although at first his only ability is some left telekinesis, which has been defined by himself as an extension of his physical strength and is therefore limited to a mass equivalent to what he can lift or manipulate physically. He has also demonstrated the power to produce a small and powerful telekinetic explosion and shows some remnant telepathy that allows him to knowingly scan and feel the immediate surroundings for living things; along with helping his team, Cypher, enter his own mind. He can also fly himself short distances.
Connection to Cable
Against popular belief, while Nate Gray (X-Man) is technically an Age of Apocalypse partner of Nathan Christopher Summers (Cable), their descendants are not the same. Although both are derived from the genetic material of Scott Summers and Jean Gray, the circumstances of the birth and creation of Cable and Nate are very different: Nate is planted in the laboratory in an alternative dimension by Mr. Sinister of the genes Scott and Jean, and Cable was born to Scott and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Gray's clone was also made by Mr. Sinister). As a result, Cable considers Nate as his stepbrother.
Because of their genetic similarity, and support their peers' ideas, Nate and Cable have identical psychic profiles, generating painful feedback for both parties when they are close to each other, in a way never shown when either are near Stryfe, clone Cable - although this proves to vary with the power of each telepathic ability. For example, when Cable telepathy burns, they do not face the problem. Both are physically very similar, with the same shining left eye and pale hair (though for different degrees due to age). Also, when Cable is de-aged on Cable and Deadpool, it's very similar to Nate Gray, while What If? arranged in the future may indicate that Nate will grow up to look identical to Cable, though that's not unusual for siblings, who are - genetically - their.
However, Nate and Cable differ in several ways. First, Nate, for not traveling time, much younger than Cable. Secondly, Nate is much more powerful than Cable, because Cable's techno-virus infection means that he must continue to use most of his power to keep the virus undisturbed while Nate has full access to his mutant ability - although at least initially, Cable has a skill level that much bigger in using that power. Finally, Cable has extensive military and weapons skills as a result of being resurrected in wartime destroyed by the Apocalypse, while Nate relies mainly on its considerable mutant strength.
The juxtaposition of these two characters allows the writer to address the issues of identity and nature versus nurturing and exploring the complex nature of family relationships in the X-Men world.
Other versions
During his time on Earth 998, ruled by the evil Queen Queen, X-Man not only meets one of his colleagues, but he also learns that there are plenty of Nate Gray in the multiverse. Obviously, he's not as unique as he thinks. Apparently, the one thing that all Nates have in common is that they were born/created on a different Earth than they later lived on. Every Nate Gray becomes the ultimate telekinetic weapon, Queen Jean hunts them down and lures them to her reality, to exploit them well. He told his scientists to create a special genetic brand that would prevent Nates from burning their power. However, most of Nate Gray is dysfunctional and, when the Queen is not satisfied with their appearance, she kills them and moves on to the next one. It is not known how many Nate Grays had fallen prey to Queen Jean before she was stopped.
Shaman
Nate Gray came to Earth-998 from his original reality, Earth-2098, which was sacrificed to restore Earth-998. The Red Queen wants to use him as the ultimate weapon, but he is so unstable, so he gives him a genetic badge, to stabilize his strength. In the experimental process, his mind was broken and he went mad. The Queen seems to kill her, but she really survived and escaped. Being a Shaman, he built a hidden village where his "tribe", the people who fought with the Queen, could live. At some point, his tribe has stolen and preserved the body of Forge, the best maker of the Queen. Eight years later, when Nate Gray of Earth-295 came to Earth-998, the Shaman helped him escape from the Red Queen. She tells X-Man that the Queen is trying to use her power, but fails, and starts traveling to various realities, searching for the perfect weapon, "the functioning Nate Gray". But in all reality he only finds the "flawed" Nate, until he meets X-Man. Together the two of Nate go to a hidden village where, under the guidance of the Shaman, X-Man uses his power to talk to Forge, who tells them the truth about the Queen. Soon after, the village was attacked by Mr. Scratch and Black Knights. Scratch destroys Forge's body, paralyzes X-Man, and almost strangles the Shaman while the Knights kill all the villagers. The Shaman uses his power to stabilize the power of X-Man, give him the X-Gene badge and send it home to Earth-616. Thinking it was Nate Gray of Earth-295, Scratch captured the Shaman and took him to the Red Queen who, realizing his trickery, killed him.
Nate Xavier
On Earth-253 Nate Xavier is one of the three strongest people on the planet. Nate is a member of the hero team known as the People's Patron. When Qabiri arrives on Earth-253 the team tries to stop him, but they all fail, Nate is killed by Qabiri, and all reality is destroyed.
Earth-9806
Nate Gray uses his precognitive powers and sees the future, where he fights with Stryfe to death, and when he dies, his power destroys half the Earth.
Earth-9997
In the universe set up as Earth-9997 (Earth X), Nate Gray finally gets infected by the Techno-Organic Virus, and becomes Stryfe. He fought Cable, and died trying to protect Madelyne Pryor.
What If?
In the Apocalypse Age the alternatives depicted in What If? X-Men Age of Apocalypse, Xavier and Magneto were killed when the Legion traveled back in time. Nate was not created in the lab but was the son of Scott Summers and Jean Gray and grew up in a quiet place created by mutants for themselves in Savage Land. Apocalypse rose to power and attacked this mutant community, declaring them to be traitors. Nate was the only survivor and joined a group of heroes led by Captain America to end the Apocalypse rules. This version of Nate is full of vengeance and cruelty and when the time comes, he assumes that killing Apocalypse is not enough. Betraying his team mates, Nate gained the strength to walk back in time and stop the Legion's own initial attack. When Captain America attempted to stop it, disaster struck and besides Xavier, Magneto, and Legion, thousands of innocent civilians died, leaving countless new alternative timetables to be mastered by Apocalypse.
