The Dark Seaside is a fantasy novel published in 2008, written by Andrew Peterson. This is the first book in The Wingfeather Saga series, and is followed by North! Or Eating , Monster in the Hollows , and The Warden and Wolf King .

On Dark Seaside is about three brothers, Janner, Tink and Leeli Igiby; their mother, Nia Igiby; the grandfather of their former pirate, Podo Helmer; and Taring Dang. The Fangs are conquerors like a Skree ground lizard whose purpose in life seems to be to keep all humans on the ground Skree is miserable and unable to resist, and who serves a mysterious person called Gnag the Nameless.

Janner is the eldest sibling determined, whom Nia and Podo expect to protect others. Tink is always hungry and ready for mischief with his brother, like exploring in the nearby dangerous forest. Leeli is kind, talented in music, and lame, but brave and can be very fast when he has to. The children have been told that their father is dead, and in most of the first books Nia is reluctant to talk about it. Podo guards the gardens, protects the family, and tells stories of his former wild life as a pirate in the sea.

The paperback book contains two maps, some illustrations, and attachments, including poetry and some form of Fangs bureaucracy, all by Peterson. The book of fifty-one chapters has three brief prologues describing various countries as well as anecdotes about how the world gets its name. The author uses funny footnotes as an aid to story-telling throughout.
