Russet is a dark brown color with a reddish orange tone. As a tertiary color, the russet is the same mixture of orange and purple.

The first recorded use of russet as the color name in English was in 1562.

The source of this color is the ISCC-NBS Method in Designing the Color and Dictionary of the Color Name (1955) used by the stamp collectors to identify the color of the postage stamps.

The color name comes from the russet, a rough cloth made of wool and dyed with woad and angry to give a gray or reddish brown color. By law 1363, poor British people must wear russets.

Russet, the color of autumn, often associated with sadness or serious seriousness. Anticipating the regret of a lifetime, Shakespeare's character Biron says in Love's Labour's Lost Act V, Scene 1: "From then on my mind will reveal/In russet yeas and honestly kersey noes. "

The color is mentioned in a famous quotation taken from a letter written by Oliver Cromwell to Sir William Spring in September 1643: "I would rather have an innocent, rusty captain who knows what he is fighting for, and loves what he knows, than what you call gentleman and nothing else] ".
