Sharon Mills Draper (born August 21, 1948) is an American children writer and professional educator, National Teacher of 1997. He is a Five-time Coretta Scott King Award winner for books on African experience -America. He is probably best known for the Hazelwood and Jericho series and for his historical novel Copper Sun. Other books include Double Dutch , Out of My Mind and Romiette and Julio, and Stella by Starlight . Draper won the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 2015. This annual award recognizes one writer and a special workforce for "a significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature". The judges cited six novels published from 1994 to 2007: Tiger Eye , Forged with Fire , and Darkness Before Dawn (Hazelwood trilogy); Battle of Jericho , Blues November , and Copper Sun .

Personal life
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Draper is a graduate of Pepperdine University. He is an active participant in the YMCA Cincinnati activities, a member of the National Council of English Teachers, the International Association of Readers, and the Highest Distinguished Woman. Ms. Draper often travels and has been a guest on television and radio shows across the country, discussing literary, reading, and education issues. He is an outstanding public speaker who discusses educational and literary groups of all ages, both nationally and internationally, with poetry readings and entertaining novels. She lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with her husband. Her daughter suffers from cerebral palsy, a disease in which the main character in the Out of My Mind lives together. She has only one son, Max, who is a freshman attending high school in Ohio.

Awards and honors
He is the winner of the National Educator Award of the Milken Family Foundation, and is the Duncanson Artist-in-Residence for the Taft Museum. She is a YWCA Career Woman of Achievement, and is a recipient of the Dean Award from Howard University School of Education, Algeria Distinguished Pepperdine University Award, Marva Collins Education Award, and Governor Education Leadership Award. Last year he was named Ohio Pioneer in Education by the Ohio State Department of Education, receiving the Beacon of Light Humanitarian award, as well as Doctor of Laws from Pepperdine University. In 2011, he received the 33rd Annual Champion of Jeremiah Ludington Award by the Education and Media Association.
He has been honored at the White House six times, and was selected as one of only four writers in the country to speak at the Gala National Book Festival in Washington, D.C, and to represent the United States in Madrid at their Book Festival. His book Copper Sun has been selected by the US State Department and the International Association of Reading as a US novel for an international reading project called Reading Across Continents. Students in the US, Nigeria, and Ghana are reading books and sharing ideas.
Tears of a Tiger has received numerous awards, including the American Library Ac./Coretta Scott King Award for a remarkable new book, and is also honored as ALA Best Books for Young Adults. It has been recognized as one of the best this year by the Children's Books Council, the New York City Library, Bank Street College, and the National Council for Social Studies. It was also named Best of the Best by VOYA.
Forged by Fire , the sequel of Tears of a Tiger , was the winner of the 1997 Coretta Scott King Award, as well as the winner of the ALA Best Book Award and Choice of Parents. Indiana Young Hoosier Awards and Awards.
Darkness Before Dawn , the third book in the trilogy, is ALA Ten Quick Options, and has received the Children's Choice Award from the International Readers' Association and received the Buckeye Book Award for 2005, and was named IRA Young Adult Choice for the year 2003.
Romiette and Julio are also listed as the ALA Best Book and have been selected by the International Reading Association as 2000 Books Essential to the Global Society, and by the New York Public Library in Their Books for Young Adolescents.
Out of My Mind was selected as the winner of the Sasquatch Reading Award 2013 by readers of Washington State and 2013 Bluestem Award by third to fifth students of Illinois. It won the 2013 California Young Reader Medal and 2013 Readers of Nevada Readers
Double Dutch was awarded the Young's Essential Social Studies Trade Book by the Children's Books Board and one of the top 10 top youth book books for 2003 by ALA, and Best of the Best for 2004 , and received the Winter Youth Reading Award for 2006.
The Battle of Jericho is the 2004 Coretta Scott King Award, one of New York's Public Library for the Youth Times, and is one of the 2005 Adult Ad Books named by the International Readers' Association.
Fire of the Stone has been selected by the NCSS-CBC Social Studies Committee Famous as the 2008 Important Handbook for Important Social Studies for Youth and honored at the 2008 New York Public Library Best Books for Young People.
We Beat the Street is listed on the New York Times Bestseller List and is on VOYA's Non-Fiction Honorable List for 2006 and honored in New York's New York 2006 New York Public Library Book for the Youth Era.
Copper Sun received the 2007 Coretta Scott King Award, crowned as one of the Top Ten Fiction Books for Youth by Booklist nominated for the 2007 NAACP Prize for Literature, and received the Ohioana Award for Adult Literature Teenager. Copper Sun is also the CBC/NCSS Social Studies Trade Book, received the Heartland Prize for Excellence in YES Literature, named as IRA's Important Book for the Global Society and named the Best Book of the Year by School Library Journals. Copper Sun is also listed on the New York Times Bestseller List.
Blues November received the 2008 Coretta Scott King Award and was awarded at the 2008 New York Public Library Book for Youth.
