In the video game, strafing is a technique for moving player characters from side to side, rather than forward or backward. In the context of first-person shooters, it refers to movement only, even when no weapons are fired. Sidestepping is an integral part of any first person or third person shooter because it allows players to avoid incoming shots while keeping their views aimed at their target. In terms of classical mechanics, "Strafing" refers to the motion of the square translational along the y-axis of the character, while "Circle straf" refers to the Orbital movement around the fixed point.

Circles enact

Especially in first-person shooters (FPSs), circle strafing is the technique of moving opponents in a circle while facing them. Circles strafe allow players to shoot continuously at opponents while avoiding counterattacks. Quickly rotating the opponent, the player shy away from the opponent's view. The cuffing circle is the most useful in close combat, where the real movements of attacking players are the largest, and thus the chance to confuse the opponent by making him lose the higher attacker's footprint. The effectiveness of the circular strafing maneuver is reduced when the opponent's weapon fires an instantly moving projectile (also referred to as a hitscan weapon), or fires a large number in a machine-gunning manner, although this effect can also be reversed using shooting techniques such as deflection, better known as 'target-leading'.

Circle strafing is very effective when used as a lag-jumping form in which the speed of synchronization between the two players affects the defensive ability to defend themselves. When the latency is high, it can lead to the phenomenon of two players facing each other, both missing by a sizeable difference, until one player suddenly collides with the obstacle and slows down enough for the other to target it.

Many shooters will allow players to minimize rifle sights or use the scope, usually swapping the speed of movement, the field of vision, and speeding across them for greater accuracy. This can make players much more vulnerable to circle-strafing, since objects will pass through their field of vision faster, they are less able to follow the target, and their lower speed makes dodge more difficult.

Straferunning

Particularly in older first-person shooters (FPS), straferunning (known as speed-strafing between players GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark , and as trichording among players from the Descent series ) is a technique that allows players to run or fly faster through the levels by moving forward and sideways at times the same one. The game incorporates this action and the player reaches about 1.4 (square roots 2) times faster than moving in one direction. The method used by the game can be shown using the addition of vectors. Pathways Into Darkness is one of the first games to allow straferunning.

The game where straferunning can be used to train forward movement independently of the sideways (strafing) movement. If, for each player location update, the game moves the player forward one unit and then moves the player sideways by one unit, the entire distance being moved is                                          2                             {\ displaystyle {\ sqrt {2}}}   . Thus, in the game with such behavior, moving to the side while moving forward will provide a higher overall speed than just moving forward, though the player will move in the direction of the diagonal in the direction that is being encountered. This feature is even further enhanced if it moves along the three axes (eg forward left over), providing                                          3                             {\ displaystyle {\ sqrt {3}}} (around 1.73) times faster, in games like Descent.

This technique is not possible in all games; most and especially modern games will clamp the speed and acceleration of the player to the maximum uniform while moving in any direction.
