Reception

Critical reception

Pilots have met with mixed reviews, with Metacritic scoring 55 out of 100 based on 20 critics. Lloyd Roberts of the Los Angeles Times thought the pilot was "well made, effective in the way it was expected in a way that made you forget you were expecting them." He then wrote "Directed Liz Friedlander aims not only for creepiness, but for the vibrant sensation of beauty that reflects the increased sensitivity and the teenager's teenage sensitivity" and appreciates the actors "are good to see, but also bring little soul to their role."

In 2015, three years after the cancellation of the show, Gavin Hetherington of SpoilerTV looks back at the final series, as well as the series as a whole. He reviewed the show nicely, remarking "some of the last episodes really build the potential of the show and make it pretty exciting, and it will lead to a remarkable second season", and says that the show should have a second season, "to further develop the character and flow stories we let hang. "

Cancellation and fan campaign

On May 11, 2012, CW canceled the series, despite being the third highest ranked player on the network. After the cancellation of the event, an official campaign led by fans entitled 'Save The Circle' was launched. The letter-writing campaign, targeted at CW, aims to encourage CW to reconsider bringing back the show for a mid-season slot. The campaign was also launched on other TV networks whose target demographics fit in with The CW - MTV, ABC Family, and Syfy. Fans donated between $ 1-10 to the Make a Wish Foundation on behalf of MTV; it aims to attach good reasons to the campaign while getting MTV attention. Secret Circle executive producer Andrew Miller auctioned the signed poster of the cast to support the campaign. In the end, more than $ 7,000 was raised. The campaign targeted at ABC Family asks fans to donate money to finance the delivery of 325,000 gold plastic coins to the headquarters of the network. The coin was symbolic of the 'cloaking coin' belonging to one of the main characters, Adam Conant's grandfather in the episode "Traitor". The metaphor is that CW 'envelops' the show by canceling it, and fans want the ABC Family to 'unload' the show by picking it up.

The writing campaign to Syfy was also launched, but in the end the leader of Save the Circle campaign decided not to pursue further networks due to budget problems. After the announcement that Warner Bros. did not enter into negotiations with ABC Family about taking its show and that the series would not be sent to another network, it campaigned for potential network targeting to be taken back. Nevertheless, a new campaign, aimed at Warner Bros., was launched after the announcement that the series' first season will not be released on DVD or Blu-ray. In September 2012, the Secret Circle is available on Netflix for live streaming. A music project was launched, with the aim of developing and distributing 10 full albums of fans online and making it available for free download. Fans are required to send audio recordings of themselves singing their own songs, or sending lyrics for potential use. Petitions are also made, in the hope that they will bring back the series. The three main campaigns together, on June 24, 2012, garnered over 85,500 signatures. Because the show was canceled, fans have selected it as "the most missed event" or "Most Shocking Cancation" in a number of polls, including E !, Clique Clack, Hypable, TV Spoiler, Fanatic TV, TV.com, and Zap2it.
