The Brown Wood Owl ( Strix leptogrammica ) is an owl that is a breeder in South Asia from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, east to west Indonesia, and southern China. This species is part of the owl family known as the distinctive owl (Strigidae), which contains most species of owls. It belongs to the owl genus without ear Strix .

Medium brown owl (45-57 cm), with a dark brown uniform top, with a faint white patch on the shoulder. The underside is a dent with a brown stroke. Facial plates are brown or fringe, white-eyed and concentric without borders, and dark-brown eyes. There is a white necklace. Gender is similar.

The call is (hoo) hoo hoo HOO or deep goke-goke-ga-LOOO or a loud shout. The alarm call is bark, wow-wow . Some subspecies are known to produce different vocalizations; they also differ in appearance and parapatric, and possibly different species: The nortiary Strix (leptogrammica) newarensis group ( owl-Himalaya ; presents the subspecies newarensis >, ticehursti , laotiana and caligata ) occurring from the foot of the Himalayas in eastern Kashmir until Taiwan has a low point that soft for -hooh is not like a stone dove. S. (l.) bartelsi ( Bartels forest birds ), Java owl from Java, the southeastern taxi, has a hard one , strong, single HOOH! with a long pause between calls.

This is an unusual bird population of dense forest. This species is very active at night, but often can be found by small birds that move it while wandering in a tree. It feeds mainly on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. It lodged in a hole in a tree or on a branching trunk, laying down two eggs.
