The Dark Circle is a fictitious criminal organization that appears in comic books from DC Comics, especially part of the comic book Super-Heroes Legion. They first appeared in 1968, coined by Jim Shooter as a criminal organization founded by five members and inhabited by many clones of the original five members.

The Dark Circle concept was then modified to consist of members from five core worlds instead of clones. The newer version, after DC Comics hacked into their history, was led by Brainiac 4 and has several legion of Super-Heroes enemies known among their ranks, not from previous generic masked-back henchmen.

Riwayat fiksi

The Dark Circle first appeared on Adventure Comics # 367 as a group of rebels who planned to conquer United Planets in the 30th century. It consists of only five people and clone troops created from the five men. The Dark Circle remains largely shrouded in mystery, even with its defeat by the Legion of Super-Heroes.

They launched a direct invasion of the Earth during the Legion of Comic Adventure, after an attack by the Fatal Five that had left the Legion and Earth defense destroyed, and was in an excellent process when Brainiac 5 was discovered. Machine Miracle and use it to repel attacks, return all Dark Circle soldiers to their homeworld.

They then attempt to invade Earth indirectly through others, especially Khunds and Dominators whom they manipulate into what is known as Earthwar. As part of their intrigue, they also free Mordru, hoping to use it against the Legion. This proved to be a mistake, however, because Mordru instead gained control of the Black Circle. But this is not immediately apparent, as he continues with the plan they have set up. Eventually Mordru and Circle were defeated.

The Dark Circle is referenced during the continuity of Giffen-Bierbaum. Members are depicted wearing a hood with a dark circle protruding (zero) above the face. In the Legion of Super-Heroes Annual # 2, they are said to have existed for millions of years, even before New Genesis and Apokolips. They had little influence over events and were defeated by other prominent factions during this period. Member of Legion Tellus joined the Black Circle during this time.

Instead of five individuals cloned, now they are formed mainly from the five worlds.

The circle here is described more as a philosophical or semi-religious movement, which specifically turns away from intellectual knowledge, and instead focuses on emotions, especially emotions called "blood" such as anger and fear. They do maintain a high level of technology, with the rebellious Dominator world that supplies most of the technology. Their main enemy, as depicted in LSH Annual # 2 (v4) is Valor, who not only opposed them physically, but also philosophically. The influence of Valor in many worlds is a major obstacle to their plans.

When the Dominator conquered the earth, the Black Circle secretly assists the resistance movement, hoping to conquer the planet itself. However, the group was eventually betrayed by its ally, Universo.

Post-Zero Clock

The Dark Circle also plays a role in the Post-Zero Hour reboot of the Legion, where it is the secret force behind the Affiliate Planet (a political group competing with United Planets) and run by Brainiac 4. Other members of the Circle include Tyr, and the leader of Khunds, Gil'Dishpan, Dominator, and Sklarian Raiders. All were killed by Brainiac 4 when they realized the level of madness.
