Histori

The company's origins are located in Sapporo, Hokkaido during the Meiji period, where the Hokkaido Development Commission (Kaitakushi) established many businesses. Seibei Nakagawa, the German brewer, became the first brewer of Kaitakushi Brewery in June 1876, and Lager Sapporo was first produced at the time. Privatized in 1886, the Sapporo beer factory became the center for the Sapporo Beer Company.

In 1887, another company, Japanese Beer Company was established in Mita, Meguro, Tokyo, and began producing Yebisu Beer. The competition between Sapporo and Japan Beer, as well as competition with Osaka (now Asahi) and Kirin brewery led to the 1906 merger of Sapporo, Japan and Osaka factories to Dai-Nippon Beer Company, Ltd., formed near the monopoly in the Japanese market until after World War II.

After 1949, Dai-Nippon was split into Nippon and Asahi factories, with Nippon Breweries continuing Sapporo's beer production in 1956 and renamed the Breweries Sapporo, in 1964. Yebisu Beer was re-launched as a separate brand in 1971, marketed as German-style barley beers. The Black Label Beer Sapporo was launched in 1977.

In 2006, Sapporo announced it would acquire Canadian Sleeman beer company with a deal worth $ 400 million.

On February 15, 2007, the Steel Partners Japan Strategic Fund, a Cayman Islands fund-funded subsidiary of Warren Lichtenstein Steel Partners and the largest shareholder (18.6% as of February 2007) from Sapporo Holdings, submitted a proposal to the company to seek approval to raise ownership to 66.6%.

On August 3, 2017, it was announced that Sapporo Brewing Company would acquire Anchor Brewing.

Despite its name, Sapporo beer is not brewed exclusively in Sapporo. Sapporo is also brewed in Sendai, Chiba, Shizuoka, and Kyushu. Most Sapporo beers sold in North America have been brewed at the Sleeman brewery in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Most Sapporo beers sold in the United States are now brewed by Sapporo Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA.

Brand

The company produces a variety of pale and dark lagers, including Sapporo Draft ( Premium in North America) and Yebisu . At the Sleeman brewery in Canada they brew a Sleeman branded beer such as Sleeman Cream Ale and Sapporo Premium .

The company also produces malt-based soft drinks, Super Clear , which was launched in 2002 as a low-alcohol beer, then converted in September 2009 into an alcohol-free malt beverage.

Yebisu

Yebisu ( ??? , Ebisu ) is wrong one of the oldest brands in Japan, was first brewed in Tokyo in 1890 by the Japanese Beer Company. Through a series of elaborate mergers and divisions, the brand was acquired and ultimately defended by the modern Sapporo Brewery. This brand was abandoned during the post-World War II era, until it was resurrected in 1971. Since then, this product has been brewed continuously.

Yebisu comes in two main varieties: Yebisu (Premium) , picnic/export beer, and Yebisu Black , Euro black beer. There are also occasional special varieties that are limited in the area of distribution and time. In April 2007, for example, there were various green labels "The Hop".

Modern Yebisu is positioned as Sapporo's "luxury" beer label. Sapporo described it as a "class touch" beer brand. This is a 100% malt beer.

Yebisu is famous for its Japanese name including the now worn we kana (character) (? or?) for the older you read, an anachronism (use of kana history). This can cause confusion when romanized, since "Y" is not spoken. The neighborhood of Tokyo from Ebisu is named for the beer, which was originally produced there, although we were then dropped. The pronunciations of "Yebisu" and "Ebisu" are the same.

Space Barley

Using barley grown from seed that spent five months on top of the International Space Station in 2006, Sapporo created Barley's limited space drink. The project is a joint project between the Russian Academy of Sciences, Okayama University, and Sapporo. The Tasters describe a taste no different from similar beers, which researchers say is important in showing that producing food in space for flights of long duration is possible. Six packets of space beer were sold in a lottery system for 10,000 yen.
