Histori

Ethan Allen Firehouse is a community landmark in downtown Burlington. It was designed by local architect A.B. Fisher and completed in 1889. With an 85-foot-tall bell tower, Firehouse was ranked as the tallest building in Burlington in 1889. It started life as home to Ethan Allen Engine Company. 4, one of seven fire departments in Burlington. In 1927, the Burlington Police Department took over the building for 40 years.

After the police department moved to South Winooski Avenue in 1967, the place was unoccupied for two years and fell into disrepair. The building was scheduled for demolition in 1973 but public interest forced the Council of Aldermen to stop its demolition plan and put the funds towards building stabilization.

A number of service operations took up residence there in subsequent years, including US Senator Patrick Leahy's office, and Vermont University Church Road Center.

BCA first developed the concept of an art center in 1995, soon after the Firehouse Gallery moved to a half ground floor. Ethan Allen Firehouse was chosen for this concept.

Remodeling

In 1999, the City Council decided to turn the fire house into the Fire Center for Visual Arts. BCA hired an architect for renovation and in the spring of 2001, they started construction. After a few months, progress stopped when major cracks formed on the north wall and the building sank about 4 inches (100 mm). After much stabilization, construction resumed.

To complete the renovation, Shelburne Museum returns the original bell back to the Firehouse tower.

The BCA Center (formerly the Fire Center for Fine Arts) opened to the public in 2002. This included dark spaces and photography studios; studio artist-in-residence; multimedia conference facilities for lectures, film series, and panel discussions; and Resource Room and Library with public meeting rooms and Internet access.

Darkroom Community

Lower level homes are Darkroom Communities and multifunctional classrooms (picture-life is sometimes held in this class).

Gallery Center BCA

The BCA Center presents "thoughtful exhibitions, supports new and innovative artists, and engages the public through the exposure of high quality artwork, exhibition-related discussions, and art activities." Their educational exhibitions and programs seek to build and retain an audience for contemporary art outside the city center.

Classroom and Resources

The Art Education Studio accommodates educational programs and classes. The Artist Resource Room is open to the public and provides a wide selection of art books, periodicals and online resources.

Roof and Cupola

In 2001, the BCA Center learned that the Shelburne Museum hopes to deliver original bells back to the Firehouse tower. Destroyed by years of water, damage, re-engineering and tower renovation as well as concentrated fund raising efforts occur. The bell was flown back to his home on September 12, 2002.
