Histori

Toblerone was created by Theodor Tobler (1876-1941) in Bern, Switzerland, in 1908. Theodor Tobler, with his cousin Emil Baumann, developed unique dairy chocolate including nougat, almond and honey with a distinctive triangular shape.

The shape of the triangle of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps is generally believed to have given Theodor Tobler his inspiration for the form of Toblerone. However, according to Theodor's son, the triangle shape comes from a pyramid form that dancers at Folies BergÃÆ'¨res made as the end of the show that Theodor saw.

Some of the early advertisements for Tobler chocolate appeared in Esperanto and Ido's international languages.

Theodor Tobler applied for a patent for the Toblerone process in Bern in 1909. The Toblerone brand was a trademark in 1909, at the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property in Bern.

Tobler Company standalone for many years. In 1970, he joined Suchard, the maker of Milka, into Interfood. Tobler Company joined Jacobs coffee company in 1982 to create Jacobs Suchard. Mondel? Z (Kraft Foods Inc. at the time) earned the majority of Suchard Jacobs, including Toblerone, in 1990.

For the yearly Toblerone Schoggifest , a special large bar is created to celebrate the birthday bar. The bar weight represents the year Toblerone, with the first bar in 2008 weighing 100 kg.

In 1932 Tobler made the first stuffed chocolate bar, Tobler-O-rum.

2016 size changes

By 2016 two peaks have been removed and larger gaps are introduced between each peak, in two bars in the UK, to cut bar weight and reduce costs while retaining the same package size. This change reduces the weight of bar 400g to 360g and from 170g to 150g; other bar sizes are not affected. The change was not well received, with one MSP calling for 'government action' by the Scottish Parliament over the change.

Cultural impact

It has been suggested that different pyramidal shapes from bars lend their name to the Toblerone line, a series of anti-tank emplacement prevalent in the Swiss border region. However, the Toblerone brand was a trademark in 1909, at the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property in Bern.

In 1995, it was revealed that Swedish politician Mona Sahlin had bought, among other things, two sticks of Toblerone using his Riksdag credit card (ie, with taxpayer money). This is known as the Toblerone affair. Sahlin was forced to step down as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister. He returned to politics in 1998.
