Development and functionality

Hair underarms, as human body hair, usually begin to appear at the beginning of puberty, with growth usually completed by the end of adolescence.

Axillary hair passes through four stages of development, driven by the adrenal androgen-weak andrene produced in men and women during adrenarche, and testosterone from the testes in men during puberty. Like Tanner Staging for pubic hair, axillary hair can be staged in accordance with the staging system, named for Pediatric Endocrinologist, [1], as follows:

  • Wolfsdorf Stage 1 - no axillary hair
  • Wolfsdorf Stage 2- little axillary hair (usually coinciding with the onset of adrenarche)
  • Wolfsdorf Stadium 3- axillary abrasive hair, less than full adult
  • Wolfsdorf Stage 4- full adult axillary hair

Axillary patient's hair placement will allow the doctor to track the child's development in a longitudinal manner.

The evolutionary significance of human armpit hair is debatable. It may be naturally axis of sweat or other moisture from the skin, assisting ventilation. Colonization by odor-producing bacteria is thus transferred away from the skin (see skin flora).

Cultural attitudes

Today in much of the Western world, it is common for women to regularly shave their armpit hair. The older male generation usually does not prune or shave the armpits, but the practice has increased among younger men. A new study found that 9% of American men aged 45-60 years to sharpen their armpits, while 73% of American men aged 15-20 years either cut or shaved their armpits. However, the prevalence of this practice varies greatly. Religious reasons are sometimes quoted; for example, some in Islamic culture, both male and female remove armpit hair to meet religious hygiene guidelines. Abolition of armpit hair is part of a collection of hygienic or cosmetic practices recommended by Muhammad (570-632) consistent with fitra for women and men and has since been generally regarded as a requirement by most Muslims. In much of the Western world, some men also choose to remove their armpits for aesthetic reasons.

Many competitive swimmers eliminate almost all of their body hair, including their armpit hair, believing it makes their body slimmer during the race. Many bodybuilders and professional wrestlers also throw away their body hair for beauty purposes.

Seneca the Younger suggests that it is a common practice in ancient Rome: "One, I believe, is just as wrong as the other: the first class makes no sense to elaborate, the other makes no sense negligently, the first to thinned the legs, the latter not even the armpits. "(letter 114).

In the West, the practice began for cosmetic reasons around 1915 in the United States and England, when one or more magazines showed a woman in a dress with a shaved axilla. Regular shaving became feasible with the introduction of safety razors at the beginning of the 20th century. While shaving armpit was quickly adopted in several English-speaking countries, especially in the US and Canada, did not expand in Europe until after World War II.

In 2015, dyed underarm hair becomes a fashion trend with some feminists in the US.

In art

In artwork, armpit hair is usually removed; indicating it is a sign of modernism. This contrasts with the portrayal of pubic hair in art, rarely depicted in works created in the Middle Ages, increasingly common in Renaissance art, and quite often in modern times.
