Frequently asked questions (FAQ) / Foire aux questions ...

Number plates in Belgium are special drivers, meaning that they are transferred to new vehicles from previous owners.

The rear plate is the supplied state, while the front plate is the supplied owner. This has its effect on the front plate display, which can be identical to the back plate or similar to the European number plate with the blue EU flag in it. This explains why you often see scratched, dirty, or old platen numbers on new cars in Belgium. The back plate is usually mounted on a base plate that displays the letter "B" and is usually an advertisement for car dealers.

The responsible government agency is the Vehicle Registration Service (DIV) of the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport.

Type

Standard

The number plate usually accompanies the owner rather than the car: this means that when an owner replaces his car, he transfers the old license plate to his new car, while the new owner of the old car must attach to his own license plate, if he has one, or apply for a new number. For this reason, although it is simple enough to determine when a given number combination is issued, the number used will not provide reliable information about the original registration year of the repaired car.

The number plate has a white background with numbers and red letters. Standard Belgian plates issued before November 2010 are 325mm in size by 105mm - smaller than most other European countries, although non-standard sizes (for Belgium) are often used for front plates - in part due to influence from other parts of Europe and partly due to plate carrying additional information such as the Euro flag. In November 2010, Belgium introduced the standard European format as one of the last EU member states to do so. This delay is caused in part by the opposition to leave a different color scheme (a red character on a white background) that supports the European standard, which specifies a black character on a white or yellow background. In the end it was decided to keep the red-white color even though the darker red color (ruby red â € <â € <- RAL 3003) was used.

The combination on the plate does not provide any information about the geographic location.

Sometimes the first letter (or the first and second letters) has a special meaning:

  • CD: Diplomat (CD stands for 'Corps Diplomatique')
  • G: Agricultural vehicles
  • M or W: Motorcycles
  • O: Can be used on vintage vehicles older than 25 years ("Oldtimers"). Since July 2013 some restrictions have been lifted. It is now allowed to drive at night or at more than 25 km from the owner's home. Vehicles should not be used for commercial purposes or driving between home and office.
  • S: Scooters
  • T or TX: Taxi ("T" used as initial letter, "TX" when preceded by number)
  • U or Q: Trailer Plates
  • Z: Dealer Platform
  • ZZ: Test Drive Vehicle

For the remaining letters, all alphabet letters are used. Originally letters I, M, Q and W were never used as second or third letters, but they were added later to extend the number of combinations available. The letter "O" is not used as a second/third letter on the six-character plate; on the plate the seven characters are used.

Diplomat

The initial letters (CD - Corps Diplomatique ) are printed in green or red, followed by the "." and 4 symbols (5 symbols in 2010) are printed in red. With chronological order sequences, these symbols can be:

  • 4 digits
  • 1 letter 3 digits
  • 3 digits 1 letter (observed in 2008)
  • 2-letter 3 digits (2010)

Castles and castles

Plates issued for Bear District Court bear vehicles only add up, following the standard color scheme. The car used by kings and queens only has a single digit (1 to 9). Cars used by members of other royal families have double digits.

Official

Dishes issued to state officials consist of one letter followed by one to three numbers. Roughly speaking, the initial letter is "A" to the Minister (excluding the regional executive) and the State Minister (honorary title for leading politician), or "P" for members of Parliament (including the regional parliament), or "E" for government members and services area. The President of the Belgian Chamber of Commerce has an "A1" plate (the first citizen of the Kingdom), the Belgian Senate president has "A2", the prime minister has "A3", and so on.

Military

White plate with black number and Belgian flag on the left.

NATO's previous headquarters used red plates with white SB (then M) followed by numbers.

Number plate for trailer and caravan

These plates are issued in separate series for trailers and caravans weighing more than 500 kg.

The previous design of the trailer number plate consists of a combination of three letters, beginning with "U", and three digits, all red on a white background reflecting and in a red frame (so the only difference from regular plates is the use of "U" as the first letter ). (Dimensions: 340 mm x 110 mm). Plates from this design are no longer sent, but still valid.

Since 2002 a new European model was introduced. This is a number plate consisting of a combination of 3 letters and 3 digits of black on a white background with a black frame. This plate always starts with the letter "Q". To the left a blue banner plate with a width of 44 mm has been added with above the circle with 12 yellow stars and below the white character "B". This will replace the old model in stages. Dimensions: 521 mm x 110 mm

This plate is never delivered to a regular vehicle.

The design further developed after 2010 and the introduction of 7 new character plates. The trailer plates are diverted to RAL-3001 colors, still starting with the letter Q (1-QAA-123).

The design is short-lived, because they are immediately replaced by a slab using Q as an indicative number (Q-ABC-123). This is the current design of trailer plates.

Plates for international agency personnel

Plates given to people working for international agencies in Belgium, including EU staff. The "International" plate may be limited by time (in accordance with the employment contract) or have unlimited validity. If applicable, the time limit is displayed within the European star's circle.

The plates have a blue character with a white background. This combination consists of 6 digits without letters. Until now the first digit is always "9". This plate has also been discontinued. Nato, EU, foreign institution, bringing a plate with a standard red template, with the 8-aaa format - ###.

Since 2014 NATO, EU, Foreign registered car institutions are provided with standard red Belgium plates in N-LLL-NNN format where N is a number and L is a letter.

European Institution

EU agency staff based in Belgium can previously requested a special number plate. The plates are blue and display the letter "EUR" in the yellow star circle on the left side. These plates are getting less favored than "international" dishes because their owners face the risk of vandalism (because many Belgians mistakenly believe that car owners are not subject to a Belgian car tax). From 2011 to mid 2015 these plates are replaced by different formats of the main digits followed by three letters and three digits, with the primary digits "8" as identifiers (8-AAA-111). The so-called 8-plate is no longer issued and the Staff of International Organizations such as NATO, EU, EuroControl, etc. issued regular Belgian dishes. Since 2014 registered cars are provided with standard red Belgium plates in the N-LLL-NNN format where N is the digit and L is mail, the cars with the 8-LLL-NNN structure will remain assigned until the expiry date.

Eurocontrol

Employees of Eurocontrol Organizations may previously obtain a blue number plate consisting of three numbers followed by the word "EURO". Like all blue plates, it has also been stopped and replaced by 8-AAA-111 plates.

Dealer plates

Dealer plates are special plates that are only available to motor vehicle manufacturers and dealers. They can only be used on vehicles owned by the manufacturer/dealer and must be updated annually. The dealer plate has green letters and numbers on a white background ("green plate"). Furthermore, it has a European flag on the left side. Standard dealer plates have Z as the initial letter and A through Y as the second letter. Plates starting with "ZZ" are provided for test drives.

Until 1996, cheap dealer plates and dealers tend to store large numbers of them, which are then leased to very expensive car owners (dealer plates are exempt from additional taxes on luxury cars). To combat this fraud the law is changing, making "green plates" much more expensive; also, police controls increased. As a result, dealers are now getting fewer plates and abuse has been reduced.

Personal plates

It is possible to get a personalized plate. Prior to November 16, 2010, personalized plates can only have a six-character combination (AAA-111 or 111-AAA) or one of a five-character combination of 1951-1973 problems. Combinations can be selected by the plate owner with the following restrictions:

  • The first letter should not conflict with standard rules, e.g. combinations starting with M-O-Q-U-W-Z are not allowed for regular vehicle plates
  • Acronyms from Belgian political parties are not allowed

With the European format, introduced on November 16, 2010, the personalized plates will begin with 9, e.g. "9-ABC-123". Possible combinations that follow the same "9" as before, ie five or six combinations of characters in the format released from 1951-2010. Since March 31, 2014, the format is no longer so tight, and riders can fully customize their license plate numbers. However, the license plate number must include at least one letter, and can not mimic the combination of numbers provided for specific use (ie CD-1234 from diplomatic plate A-0 to A-99999 from official plates etc.)

Temporary plate

Temporary registration plates are issued for vehicles intended for export, either by companies or individuals. They are in a pattern that is generally reminiscent of other Belgian plates, but with a white character with a red background.

Effective May 1, 2016, Belgium's temporary plate has changed. The Euro-style plate has a blue ribbon on the left, showing the symbols of European star circles and the letter B. Characters stamped and stained white on a red background, as before, follow the ZA pattern - ## - AAA. The first character is X for vehicles intended for export within 30 days, or W for registered vehicles for a while. The middle two digits are the last two years of a calendar year (e.g., "16" For 2016). Three-letter indication of the month when the plate becomes effective appears under the second separator. Dishes are issued in pairs for all vehicles (one front, one rear), except for motorcylcles, mopeds and trailers.

Before 2016, these plates only make numbers (no letters). In 2010, the number of digits increased from six to seven. The year band on the left side (on the right since 2010) shows an expiration date.

History

From 1899 to 1925, from 1928 to 1951 the registration plate had 6 numbers, but its use has now ended. They have the color changed to color now, see the bottom.

From 1925 to 1928 it was very similar to the 1951-1961 style, except the style remains (always "A-1234")

From 1951 to 1973, registration plates had 5 characters: one letter and four digits or two letters and three numbers or one letter, three digits and one letter: "A-1111", "AA-111" and "A-111-A ". Since plates connect with drivers rather than to vehicles, many of these older plates are still in use.

Dishes issued between 1973 and 2008 use a three-letter combination followed by three numbers: "AAA-111". In June 2008, a new pattern was introduced with the numbers ahead: "111-AAA". By this time the 1973 series had almost run out of combinations. Until the first quarter of 2009, the last plate of the old series (starting with Y, the Z series reserved for dealer use) was published simultaneously with a new layout, with the latter reserved initially for registration made over the Internet.

European-style license plate, introduced on 15 November 2010, has seven characters: the main digit followed by three letters and three digits (1-AAA-111). The 111-AAA series distribution stopped at that time, so even though the plates were printed in this series up to 999-CFQ numbers, the last one had not been published. This and all old series remain valid and no date is set to expire.

Dishes for motorcycles with a capacity of more than 50 cc issued before November 2010 have black letters on a yellow background and begin with the letters "M" or "W". This plate has a square design, with three letters on the first line and three numbers in seconds. The newer European plate is red in white as the standard vehicle plates and starts with 1-MAA-001. Motorcycles with a capacity of less than 50 cc have no license plates.

Plates are no longer used

  • 1899-1911: The first plate uses black letters on a white plate.
  • 1911-1919: White numbers on black plate. As it is today, only the back plate is provided by the state.
  • 1919-1925: White numbers on blue plate.
  • 1925-1928: White character: one letter followed by number.
  • 1928-1951: A red number on a white plate.

Plate still in use, red on white

  • 1951-1961: 1 letter, 4 digits (possible layout: A.1234, 1.A.234, 12.A.34, 123.A.4, 1234.A)
  • 1962-1971: 2 letters, 3 digits (layout possibilities: AB.123, 1.AB.23, 12.AB.3, 123.AB)
  • 1971-1973: 1 letter, 3 digits, 1 letter (A.123.B)
  • 1973-2008: 3 letters, 3 digits (ABC.123)
  • 2008 (June 25) -2010 (November 15): 3 digits, 3 letters (123.ABC)
  • from 2010 (November 15): 1 digit, 3 letter, 3 digit (1-ABC-123)

Recent developments

Belgium should begin issuing European registration plates in July 2010. However, with the unexpected collapse of the federal government, the introduction of the new scheme was postponed until November 15, 2010. The last plate of the old series, 999-CFQ, was suppressed by the Secretary of State for Mobility ÃÆ' â € ° tienne Schouppe.

The plate meets the European standard format: to the left of the blue line indicates the letter B and the star circle.

Flemish separatism and 'VL' controversy

When the new European plate scheme was working in 2010 (during the Belgian political crisis of 2007-11), the Secretary of State for Mobility Etienne Schouppe, who was part of the Flemish CD & amp; V, propose black text on the yellow background style plate for better readability. But this was met with criticism from French Community politicians in the federal government because yellow and black were the official Flemish colors - eventually the old red-and-white style was re-adopted with new plates.

On January 11, 2011, in the midst of high separatism in Belgium, the leader of the Flemish populist party and nationalist Vlaams Belang Filip Dewinter arrived in front of the Flemish Parliament raising 'VL' (for Vlaanderen , the name of Flanders) The badge above 'B' (for Belgium) in his vehicle plate, and posing with a VL plate in front of the camera. He encouraged other Flemish people and his party members to get VL plates. VL plates were criticized by Dirk Van der Maelen of the Flemish Socialistische Partij Anders party, which said it violated Belgian law that state vehicles registered in the country must carry the country code 'B'. Unlawful drivers may be subject to a 55 euro fine. Tanguy Veys of Vlaams Belang protested that the same nationalist plate was legally used in European regions such as Scotland, Brittany and Catalonia.

In 2015 it was reported in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that the royal decision could double the violation fines to 110 euros.
