The Yale Physician Associate program received first class in 1971. The mission of the program is to educate individuals to become outstanding doctors and to foster leaders who will serve their communities and advance the profession of Doctor Assistants. Founder of the program, Dr. Alfred M. Sadler Jr., served as his first director in 1970. Yale School of Medicine maintains the only PA program called the "Partner Doctor" program rather than the "Doctor Assistant" program in the United States, due to pre-date formation of the accreditation body and has chosen to retain its original name. Note that despite name differences, graduate programs will take the National Assistant Certification Examination Test and will be called a Physician Assistant (PA) when practicing.

Academics

Completion of the 28-month curriculum resulted in a master's degree award. Education is divided into two parts (didactic and clinical phase). The Yale School of Medicine School provides education, which is coordinated by the core Faculty of the Doctor's Program. Years of didactic include clinical and basic sciences as well as courses in research methods, ethics and physical examination. The clinical phase is a duration of fifteen months with thirteen rotations a month and two months for research. Yale University requires all graduates to complete the original thesis under the guidance of the Faculty of Medicine faculty. Many graduates have pursued this research topic through the Yale Downs alliance. This fellowship gives students the opportunity to act in accordance with their ideas in an underserved international environment. The PA program offers a joint degree (MMSc/MPH) with Yale School of Public Health.

In 2015 ranked by US News of the Best Doctor Assistant Program, Yale was ranked # 20 with Midwestern University, Northeastern University, Rosalind Franklin University, and University of Southern California.

In 2013 James (Jim) Van Rhee began as program director having previously held a position at Northwestern University. This leadership change has led to an innovative era in PA programs with increased use of technology and problem-based learning. In 2015, the program received a national headline when they began to develop a distance learning format for medical education. The development of this program has not been without controversy as alumni have expressed concern over the increased registration and benefits of distance education. The development of the program is potentially delayed because the PA accrediting body identified the recent class expansion for the Yale PA program.

International

The PA program continues with Yale University's global focus and encourages students to study internationally. The program currently has clinical sites in Uganda, Peru, Central America, and the UK. In recent years, students have studied in five continents, and faculty are often consulted in the global development of PA and medical education.
