Plot

In Gatlin, South Carolina, Ethan Wate's teenager awakens from a recurring dream of a girl he does not know. In a voiceover narrative, he describes his pleasure in reading the forbidden books, his desperation for the existence of his small town, and his dream of leaving Gatlin to college. Arriving on her first day of the first year, Ethan sees newcomer Lena Duchannes, who resembles the girl she dreams about. The other students were unfriendly to her and spread the gossip about Lena's uncle, Macon Ravenwood, and stated that her family was a devil worshiper. Hearing these whispers, Lena tensed. On the way home, Ethan nearly bumps into Lena, whose car breaks down. She gave him a ride home, and two ties to their love with poetry and lost their mother.

During class, some girls insist that they can not be in class with Lena. They began to pray for protection from Lena and his family, shouting protesting teachers. Lena looks shaken and the class windows break, reinforcing the fear and suspicion of the class and the townspeople in general that she is a magician. Ethan checks Lena afterward and she runs away from class. Ethan goes to Ravenwood Manor to see Lena and they start forming a friendship. After seeing them together, Macon invites him inside and scares him. Ethan then returns to the house to give him the pendant he finds in Greenbriar as a gift. Both of them touched the locket triggering a flashback to the American Civil War, after which Ethan awoke at his home. Macon disagrees with their passion and develops love for each other, and conspires with Ethan's family friend, Amma, to separate the two. Ethan continues to pursue Lena until he confesses that he and his family are "caster" capable of performing magic. On his sixteenth birthday, Lena's true nature would lead her to light or darkness; Lena is afraid of the latter, for she is absorbed by evil and hurts the one she loves. Ethan and his family insisted that he was responsible for his own choices and assured him that he was a good person.

Things are complicated by the arrival of two very powerful dark casters aimed at pushing Lena into the dark: Ridley, Lena's provocative cousin and childhood friend; which is a siren, a caster who can make humans (especially humans) obey his commands telepathically; and Lena's mother, Sarafine, who did not raise Lena and currently has Ny. Lincoln, the mother of Ethan Link's friend. In a local church, townspeople gather to complete a petition to drive Lena away from school. Later, Macon arrives and beyond the natural realm of Sarafine confronts him. He estimates that Lena will become a stronger caster, because the moon will bring more energy and will contribute to the most powerful solstice. Sarafine intends to Lena use his new power to clean up the human Earth, leaving the caster to rule behind them. But Lena and Ethan use the pendant to experience all their past flashbacks back in theaters, while on the date, which reveals that their ancestors, Genevieve Duchannes's caster and fleet Confederate warrior Ethan Carter Wate, fell in love. Ethan Carter was shot in battle, and Genevieve resurrected him using a forbidden spell that caused him to become dark, killing one true love and cursing all the Duchannes family women to become dark. This embarrassed Lena and she left the theater in fear. They consulted Amma, who was a fortune teller and custodian librarian under the city library. The most ancient of these books, The Book of Moons, reveals the secret to undoing the curse: someone who loves Lena must die. Not wanting to take Ethan's life, Lena has her last moments along with Ethan where she makes it snow and then erases all her memories of their time together.

Ridley teases Link and gives her a bullet for use in the upcoming Civil War Demonstration of the Battle of Honey Hill which will take place on Lena's birthday. During the re-show, Link and Ethan agree to "kill" each other so they can undo the repeat. While at the sixteenth anniversary ceremony, Lena senses the curse's broken curse and runs into Ethan, holding her dying body as Ridley and Sarafine push her to surrender to the sadness and accept the darkness. Lena rages angrily, sends out a lightning attack and a huge twister through the reenactors crowd and seems to kill everyone until Ethan's body turns into Macon, who previously disguised as Ethan to be the sacrifice needed to lift the curse and reveals that she promised Ethan Mama to keep her son life. Her dying words prompted Lena to "claim herself"; he then causes the moon to disappear, so can not claim himself for darkness. Lena allows Ridley to escape and pull Sarafine from Mrs. Lincoln's body, using her power to seal Sarafine's spirit in the form of a branch.

Six months later, an amnesia Ethan stops at the library to visit Amma before leaving for a NYU college tour with Link. He apologized to Lena for not knowing him while they were in Gatlin. When he asks if a book by Charles Bukowski (which he gave to him when they first met) is a good thing, Lena asks him to define the good (the same answer he first gave him) and presents the book to him as a "get out of Gatlin now". When Link Drive visited his mother in a mental hospital, after being released from Sarafine's possession, before leaving for NYU, Ethan reads a passage in a book he previously associated with Lena, while Lena is revealed in the castor's library to become a light-dark caster, one eye changed in different colors, shown in the same way as their cousin and mother did. As Link and Ethan drove past the city lane, Ethan saw a burned out sign of the city and had a moment of warning. The car stopped; Ethan got out of the car and shouted Lena's name; he hears his call and is freed from his dark side before the screen fades to black.

Production

Alcon Entertainment purchased rights to Beautiful Creatures in 2009, with director Richard LaGravenese signing soon after to write and direct the movie. Casting for the film starts at the end of 2011, and in February 2012, Viola Davis plays the role of Amma. Soon after, Jack O'Connell and Alice Englert were announced to play key characters from Ethan Wate and Lena Duchannes. O'Connell then came out of the movie due to scheduling conflicts, with Alden Ehrenreich assuming the role of Ethan. Further foundry includes Emma Thompson as Sarafine and Mrs. Lincoln and Jeremy Irons as Lena's uncle, Macon Ravenwood. From Lena's character, Englert states that "Lena is like most girls when you feel so insecure".

The subject of photography was originally scheduled to begin April 23, 2012, in New Orleans, and lasted, LaGravenese said, starting "I think, April 16, and then we shot until June 26, and then posted [-production] for me from July 5th to 17th December. "LaGravenese chose to incorporate special, practical effects along with computer-based for certain scenes, such as the Emmy Rossum explained:" [W] hen we walked onto the stage and realized that the candlesticks really move, the seats really spinning, the table performs actually spinning... it's all very interesting. "On September 19th, 2012, the first trailer for Beautiful Creatures was released.

Camille Balsamo plays Genevieve Katherine Duchannes in the cut sequence of the film; LaGravenese said:

There is one part I take on the green screen where I have all these actresses playing all the different Duchannes women from different periods [of the Civil War on]. And my costume designer, Jeffrey Kurland, has dresses and objects, one of which comes from the turn of the century, one of which dates from the 20s, one from the 40s, one from the 60s, and they will appear in the first flashback and at the end of the movie, and then I cut it.... It's just an unsuccessful idea.

Reception

box office

Critical response

The film received mixed criticism from critics. It has a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes' review aggregation website, based on 169 reviews, with a consensus on the site stating: "Charming romantic prospects and esteemed buffer props, Beautiful Creatures is a slow adaptation of YES novels that feels easier to set Twilight . "At Metacritic, the film received a 52% score based on 40 reviews, showing mixed or average reviews.

Owen Gleiberman, at Entertainment Weekly , gave the movie "B-", writing, " Beautiful Creatures will arrive at a market full of Twilight addicts still eager to fix their teenage-romantic supernatural, and the concept of the film could not be more clear: It's Twilight with reversed sex: This time a transient boy: moody, Ethan the bookworm, outsider in his small quiet town. "Gleiberman added that although the film is" pretty and not too bad pictures act... [but] the audience, like Ethan, spends too much time waiting for Lena to find out if she's a good girl or a bad girl. "

The film review website ScreenRant calls the movie "a choppy and melodramatic experience with very little payout outside of the central love story.Am worse, ignoring the usual nasal dialogue about eternal love and sacrifice, this Story doomed lovers are so grim and unconvincing-even when compared to the talented young novels that fans of the romance of the supernatural love will get what they expect... "

David Denby of The New Yorker wrote that the film "is a classic example of confusion and direct blunders that can overtake talented people who are committed to a purely concept driven by the film market... Alas, satire energy and Ethan's bright talks disappeared after a while. "He praised the scene from the Civil War flashback that" arose when Ethan and Lena watched a movie in a local theater, but only those who could see it "as" an interesting idea that I hope LaGravenese pursued as a parallel narrative. This kind of movie, however, demands no fascinating ideas but fun show and excessive climax and a soundtrack filled with thuds and choruses of women shouting. "

Scott Mendelson of Forbes magazine called the film "very good" and encouraged viewers who missed it to check it on video.

The Cinemascore audience poll gave this movie a B.
