blue ribbon is a high quality symbol. This association comes from The Blue Riband, a prize awarded for the fastest Atlantic Ocean crossing by passenger liners and, prior to that of Cordon Bleu, which refers to the blue band worn by certain orders of knights. The spelling of riband is still found in most English-speaking countries, but in the United States, the term is changed to blue ribbon , and this color tape is being given for first place in the athletic endeavor certain or other competition (such as regional and state fairs). It can also be applied to different group members or commissions who have convened to deal with situations or problems; ordinary usage is "blue ribbon commission" or "blue ribbon panel".

In some fair competition in the US, especially 4-H and FFA farms and horticultural events, blue ribbons can be provided for any project or exhibition that meets or exceeds all the criteria for a competition assessment. In Canada and the UK, the blue ribbon is given to the sec place, with red tape supplied for the first.
However, this project is not necessarily the first place determinant. In such a case, purple ribbons can be given to the champion and second winner (or reserve).
