Ervia , formerly known as Bord GÃÆ'áis or Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann ( Irish pronunciation: Ã, ['b ???? d?'? a:? 'e: r ?? n ??] , meaning "Gas Board of Ireland"), is a multi-utility company that distributes natural gas pipelines, water services and dark fiber services in Ireland. The state-owned company has built an extensive network across Ireland.
In 2014 Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy division was sold to a consortium headed by Centrica, and the name Bord GÃÆ'áis was moved as part of the sale. Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann was therefore renamed to Ervia in June 2014 and as a result no longer sells gas directly to customers. Ervia is the parent company of Ireland's largest utility company, Irish Water along with Aurora Telecom's dark fiber operator.

Histori
Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann was established as a semi-state enterprise by the Irish government in 1975 to replace a series of small gas companies based in the private sector, some of whom have experienced financial problems. The company was originally established as a private limited company by shares, Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann Teoranta ââi>, before being converted into a legal company under the Gas Act of 1976, the main law where BGE operates.
The oldest private company is the Alliance and Dublin Consumers' Gas Company, founded in the early nineteenth century by Daniel O'Connell, a prominent Irish politician and Lord Mayor of Dublin. After initially supplying the company (known only as Dublin Gas in the 1980s) to wholesale natural gas, Bord GÃÆ'áis acquired the company's assets when it entered the curator in 1987, including its headquarters in D'Olier Street, Dublin. Other city gas companies were acquired by Bord GÃÆ'áis in Cork, Limerick, Clonmel, and Kilkenny.
In 2002, then Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann sold art deco art deco Dublin Gas head office building on D'Olier Street, Dublin to Trinity College Dublin. The building was designed by Robinson and Keefe Architects in about 1928. Its exterior is coated with gray and black stone. The interior originally illuminated by Gasoliers still remains as a protected structure. Bord GÃÆ'áis moved to a building built at Foley Street, Dublin, which is now the main office of Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy. Bord GÃÆ'áis now has offices in Lower Mount Street, Dublin.
For nearly two decades the main gas supply available to Bord GÃÆ'áis comes from Marathon Petroleum's gas field near Kinsale, off the coast of Cork. This gas field was discovered in 1971, the same year as the establishment of the Nuclear Energy Council. This gas field landed in Inch, Co Cork.
Deregulation of the Irish gas market
Beginning in the early 2000s, Ireland's state-owned public facilities underwent a major reform thanks to adoption by EU members of the EU's Third Energy Package. This requires vertically integrated utilities such as Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann to limit legally and is divided into two roles: Transmission System Operator (TSO) and Distribution System Operator (DSO) even though DSO/TSO combined is allowed for two fenced rings from each other This results in two new entity "arms" created in the group of Bord GÃ|áis; Bord GÃÆ'áis Networks and Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy Supply. A similar situation occurs with the Agency for Electricity Supply with it being divided into two main units, legally distinct and separate; ESB Networks and ESB Customer Supply, now called Electric Ireland, although both are owned by the ESB Group.
On February 18, 2009 Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy Supply was renamed Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy and competed in a completely regulated new gas market, legally separate and distinct from the rest of Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann. As part of the overall opening of Ireland's overall energy market, Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy enters the regulated electric market offering multiple fuel bundles to consumers. Other companies including Airtricity and Electric Ireland are also starting to compete with Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy in the gas sector, with Bord GÃÆ'áis Networks being impartial with all companies seeking to utilize the gas network. It is expected that BGE will not be different from other gas providers.
Bord Sales GÃÆ'áis Energy
The condition of the EU/IMF bailout program for Ireland requires the Irish government to sell some state-owned assets to help repay loans and reduce Ireland's debt burden. In February 2012 announced by the Irish government announced it will sell Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy as required in the terms of the bailout.
In March 2014 Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann confirmed it would sell its customer supply arm Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy to a consortium consisting of Centrica, Brookfield Renewable Energy and iCON Infrastructure for EUR1.1 billion. The sale involves the separation of group retail units among the three buyers. The main retail division will be purchased by Centrica, while wind assets under SWS will be acquired by Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners and iCON infrastructure that acquires Northern Ireland based Firmus Energy. As part of the deal, the name Bord GÃÆ'áis will be sent to Centrica which requires the rump entity to be renamed.
In June 2014, Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' is ireann was renamed to Ervia being the parent company of three different but free utility companies: the Irish Gas Network (formerly Bord GÃ| áNetworks), Air Ireland and Aurora Telecoms.

Subsidiaries
Irish Gas Network
The Irish Gas Network is responsible for the development, operation and maintenance of Ireland's natural gas network. This network provides gas to customers in all major cities in Ireland, along with several cities across the country. Many suppliers provide gas services to customers and businesses through this pipeline. Two interconnects connect pipelines to Scotland (by spurring links to the Isle of Man supplying Manx Power Authority).
Much of its modern gas supply is imported although the new gas field known as Corrib off the coast of Mayo is scheduled to be operational by 2016, but Ervia will only buy a small amount offtake; the majority will be traded on the Intercontinental Exchange.
Air Ireland
The Water Services Act (2013) formally creates Air Ireland as a subsidiary of Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ'â ⬠ireann, to provide "safe, clean, and affordable water and waste water services" to Irish water users. Public concerns about operations, documentation, and financial issues were highlighted throughout the early months of the subsidiary's operations.
Water Ireland is responsible for two regulatory bodies, the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) which is the economic regulator for the water industry, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which is an environmental regulator.
Aurora Telecom
Aurora Telecom specializes in providing dark fiber services to the private sector. Being a sister company of the Irish Gas Network, Aurora Telecom can utilize an extensive gas pipeline to build fiber-optic lines, especially in Dublin, although with networks now stretching from the capital to Cork, Limerick and Galway through several cities including Athlone, Mullingar and Ennis.

Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy previously was the retail division (industrial, commercial and residential) Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann. In February 2012, the Irish government announced its intention to sell Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy as part of the necessary reforms after the banking crisis bailout and finalize the deal in June 2014. Currently Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy is a fully independent entity of Ervia.
Retail Chart Bord GÃÆ'áis
Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann maintains twelve stores (branded Energy Supplies Store ) across the country, but they are run on a franchise basis and not by Bord GÃÆ'áis itself. In 2002 Bord GÃÆ'áis The Natural Gas Showroom on D'Olier Street, operated by the company itself, was closed, in 2006 the Cork company's showroom was also closed.
SWS
At the end of 2009 Bord GÃÆ'áis ÃÆ' â ⬠° ireann bought SWS wind energy company.
However, as part of a large-scale EU/IMF diamanatkan many state assets mid-2014 the company was sold to the Canadian energy company Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners for US $ 680 million as part of the sale of Bord GÃÆ'áis Energy to the energy giant British Centrica.
Firmus Energy
Bord GÃÆ'áis has plans to develop a gas market in Northern Ireland. The pipeline from Carrickfergus to Derry completed in October 2004 and now serves the Coolkeeragh Power Station. The second pipeline, known as the South-North pipeline, was commissioned in October 2006. It runs from Gormanston in the Republic to join the Carrick/Derry pipeline near Antrim creating an all-Ireland network and provides redundancy if there is a problem with Scotland. - Northern Ireland or Scotland pipeline - Irish interconnectors.
The Utility Regulator for Northern Ireland gives Bord GÃÆ'áis a license to supply homes and businesses in towns and cities near two pipelines - Antrim, Armagh, Ballymena, Ballymoney, Banbridge, Craigavon, Derry, Limavady and Newry - where a local subsidiary of BG uses the trade name Firmus Energy . On December 1, 2005, Firmus launched their first supply in Northern Ireland, to the large Michelin tire factory in Ballymena. On April 25, 2006, Firmus connected its first residential customer in Derry.
As part of the Irish government's disposal of state-owned assets, Firmus Energy was sold in March 2014 to iCON Infrastructure.
Gaslink
On July 4, 2008, the "arms length" subsidiary of Bord GÃÆ'áis, Gaslink was established to run the role of transmission and distribution system operators. However, as part of the cost-cutting measures on 1 August 2015, Gaslink was removed and his responsibilities returned to the Irish Gas Network.
