Plot

Willie Loomis, Collins's carpenter, was looking for an old treasure in the family tomb when he unintentionally freed Barnabas Collins, a 175-year-old vampire who enslaved him. After his release, he attacked Daphne Budd, the secretary for Collinwood's mother, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. He was found by Jeff Clark, who brought him back to the house where Dr. Julia Hoffman gave her medical attention.

Barnabas introduced himself to the family under the guise of "cousin of England". Elizabeth and the others were interested in Barnabas and immediately liked her. Barnabas insisted on moving to the Old House and having a party to honor the family; However, on the eve of the party, Elizabeth's daughter Carolyn Stoddard was bitten by Barnabas as she got ready.

Later on the ball, he was introduced to David Collins's young gorkness and girlfriend Jeff Maggie Evans and instantly smitten with him, as he had a striking resemblance to his long-lost fiance, Josette du Pres. Maggie thought of leaving Collinwood, but Barnabas persuaded her to stay. Back at Old House, she told Willie about Josette and how she took her own life on the night they were getting married. Carolyn overhears and threatens to uplift her with jealousy. Angry, Barnabas gives a lethal bite to Carolyn, much to Willie's horror. Shocked Willie brought Carolyn home; He slowly walked to the doorway, but he was soon found slumped in the doorway - dead - by the maid, Ny. Johnson.

Funeral services are held for Carolyn, and she is buried in the Collins family mausoleum. Dr. Hoffman analyzed Carolyn's blood samples and identified trace elements of the same unidentified virus that was present in Daphne Budd's blood sample. Professor T. Eliot Stokes, a family friend, told Julia and told him that the recent attack on Collinsport was probably caused by vampires.

Carolyn climbed up as a vampire and almost attacked David. Stokes and Julia try to explain, but Elizabeth and Roger refuse to listen. Former fiancé Carolyn Todd meets her and she bites her. After he was brought back to Collinwood, the family realized that Stokes and Julia were right about vampires. Todd again sneaks out looking for Carolyn, but he's cornered and stalked, instantly kills him.

Julia finally discovers that Barnabas is a responsible vampire. She visits him in the Old House and assures him that he can use the method to make him human and he reluctantly agrees. Julia gives her a shot that lets her walk during the day. Over time, Barnabas and Maggie began spending time together while Jeff went to Boston. Stokes confronts Julia about helping Barnabas - and realizes that she is in love with him - and reminds her that she is in love with Maggie. Overcoming her jealousy, Julia gives an injection to Barnabas that causes her to grow aged quickly. Outraged, he strangled her to death. A frightened Maggie watches this and tries to escape, but is captured and bitten by Barnabas before he can escape and he vows to return for him. Jeff was soon back, and he was told about the family history by Stokes and Roger and that Barnabas intended to make Maggie his bride. That night, Barnabas bites Maggie again, rejuvenates herself, and then kidnaps her.

Jeff and others chased after them; However, Roger and Stokes were killed. Jeff finally finds Maggie in the old church in the trance and in Josette's wedding dress. Willie warned him not to stop Barnabas and drop him. Willie took Maggie out of the room to where Barnabas was waiting for her. He puts it on the altar and will bite when Jeff wakes up and shoots him, but Willie, running to stop Barnabas, moves on the street, and is hit by Jeff's arrow bolt. Barnabas lured Jeff out of his hiding place and forced him into a witness by placing him in a trance; however, when Barnabas tried to bite Maggie, she screamed in pain as she was hit on her back. Turning around, he was startled then angry to find that it was Willie - in his last redemptive act - who stabbed him with an arrow bolt. Barnabas choked on Willie who was badly wounded, but Loomis's attack kept Jeff out of Barnabas' tug long enough for Jeff to finish riding a bolt through the vampire's back, eventually exploding on his bloody chest. Maggie, now revived, was rescued by Jeff, both of whom watched for dead bodies of dead vampires and Willie Loomis before leaving the damaged chapel.

In the post-credit scene, Barnabas's body turns into a bat and then disappears.

Production

Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis began to throw an idea about a film based on his gothic soap hit opera in 1968. The project was finally given a green light at MGM by company president James Aubrey in 1970. Curtis decided to Use the original Barnabas storyline as the basis for the film, but with modified conclusions.

The film was taken in six weeks with a budget of $ 750,000. The main shootings took place in several historic locations, including Lyndhurst Estate in Tarrytown, New York, where production had to work around a public tour scheduled at home. Additional footage shot near the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery; part of the locals appear in the Dark Shadows series as well. Several interior scenes were taken at Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk, Connecticut. Along with the original cast, Dan Curtis added other actors to the cast: Terry Crawford, Jerry Lacy, and Michael Stroka, who performed the Dark Shadows 1890s segment; Don Briscoe, who acts as a cursed twin brother Chris and Tom Jennings; Dennis Patrick, who plays Paul Stoddard and Jason McGuire; and George DiCenzo, who performed more behind-the-scenes work in the last two years of the show.

Unrestricted by TV censorship, the film is much rougher than its television counterpart, with dripping vampire drops and bloody deaths. The film was released at the peak of the popularity of TV shows for massive commercial success.

Dark Shadows original producer Dan Curtis's idea was to edit the recording together from the original TV series to a long movie, an idea that was quickly abandoned. The TV series is still in production while the movie is being made. Some characters must be written temporarily from the show so the actor will be available to appear in the movie. Barnabas, for example, was caught in his coffin on a TV show by a failed writer who wanted to use the vampire life story as the basis for a novel.

During the filming time, some actors are written out of the TV series so they will be available for filming. Kathryn Leigh Scott absent from 30 episodes (986 to 1015); Jonathan Frid absent from 28 episodes (983-1010); Grayson Hall was absent from 21 episodes (986 to 1006); John Karlen absent from 21 episodes (990 to 1010); Nancy Barrett absent from 20 episodes (991-1010): Louis Edmonds absent from 17 episodes (991 to 1008); Don Briscoe was absent in 15 episodes (986 to 1000); Joan Bennett was absent from 15 episodes (991 to 1006); and David Henesy absent from 9 episodes (993 to 1001).

The preview version of this movie includes scenes where young David Collins pretends to hang himself. It was removed because there are concerns some children may "try this at home". No copies of this record are known to exist. Another scene that was shown in several theaters was Jeff tested the bow before chasing Barnabas.

The paperback novelization of the film by Marilyn Ross (who has written a series of novels based on TV shows) was published in October 1970. The novel is based on the original script, and contains several scenes that were either cut from the film or never filmed.

Sequel

The second film was originally supposed to bring back Barnabas, and would be called the Curse of the Dark Shadows (according to the famous Monster of Filmland ). Before pre-production can begin, however, the series has gone from the air, and Jonathan Frid has moved on to other things. Instead, Night of Dark Shadows was created, focusing on Collinwood after the new heir of Quentin Collins (David Selby) took over. Elizabeth Stoddard received a short title in the film, but was not present.
