An optical reader is a device found in most computer scanners that capture visual information and translate images into digital information that computers can understand and display.
An example of an optical reader is a markense system for selection where voters mark their selection by filling rectangles, circles, or ovals, or by completing arrows. After voting the tabulation device reads the sound using "dark mark logic", where the computer selects the darkest sign in the given set as an option or the intended voice.
