Composition

The Wainwright Sisters' Songs in the Dark was released by PIAS in November 2015. Their debut collaboration album featured sixteen songs that have been described as "dark, mysterious, and beautiful" interpretations of the songs sung to them as a child. Includes songs by their mothers Kate McGarrigle and Suzzy Roche, respectively, and their father with Loudon Wainwright III. Accredited family members include Lily and Sylvan Lanken and Anna McGarrigle on vocals, and Jane McGarrigle on piano. Other contributors to the album include Brad Albetta on bass, keyboard, and organ, Thomas Bartlett on piano, Tom Mennier for bell settings, ÃÆ' â € ° loi Painchaud on banjo and harmonica, and Joel Zifkin on the violin. Albetta and Sylvan Lanken are also credited as audio engineers; the first to receive additional credit for mixing. Kathleen Weldon creates album covers.

The album opens with "Prairie Lullaby" (William Hill, Jimmie Rogers) and is followed by Goebel Reeves's "Hobo's Lullaby". "El Condor Pasa", originally a musical composition from Zarzuela 1913 from Peruvia Daniel AlomÃÆ'a Robles of the same name, popularized by American folk rock duo Simon & amp; Garfunkel, who recorded it on their 1970 album Bridge Over Troubled Water with the title "El Condor Pasa (If I Can)". The 1970 version is credited to Jorge Milchberg, AlomÃÆ'a Robles, and Paul Simon. Roche remembers how "frightening" it is to learn the song as a teenage guitarist: "My Aunt Terre taught it to me and I remember the extraordinary and seemingly impossible task of switching to C in chorus as a new player." The song begins with Wainwright appearing in lower and lower registers and followed by a higher Roche harmony. Wainwright said about the inclusion of the song on the album, "I'm so glad Lucy thinks about this song, it's a very beautiful melody and bonds very well with the mystery of notes."

The next two songs, "Lullaby" and "Lullaby for a Doll", written by Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle (mother of Martha Wainwright), respectively. McGarrigle (1946-2010) is a Canadian singer-songwriter who writes and performs with his sister Anna as a duo of Kate and Anna McGarrigle. "Runs in the Family" and "Baby Rocking Medley" written by Terre Roche and Rosalie Sorrels, respectively. "Screaming Issue" was co-written by Wainwright III and Terre Roche (about Lucy Wainwright Roche himself), and originally appeared on the 1985 studio album of former I'm Alright. "Long Lankin" was the first of three traditional songs on the album. The a acappella rendition features vocals by the duo cousin Lily and Sylvan Lanken. "Our Mother the Mountain" originally appeared as the title song on the second studio album Townes Van Zandt, released in 1969. Roche and Wainwright perform songs with a slightly faster tempo.

"End of the Rainbow" and "Dusty Skies" are credited to Richard Thompson and Cindy Walker, respectively. Former originally appeared on the 1974 Thompson album, I Want to See a Bright Night Lamp . The second traditional song, "All the Pretty Horses", followed by Irving Berlin "Russian Lullaby". "Do You Love an Apple" is credited to Kevin Burke, TrÃÆ'ona NÃÆ' Dhomhnaill, MÃÆ'cheÃÆ'¡l ÃÆ' â € Å"Domhnaill, Paddy Keenan, DÃÆ'³nal Lunny, and Matt Molloy. The album closed with the third traditional song, "Go Tell Aunt Rhody".

Reception

Melody Lau from CBC Music argues, "Wainwright and Roche showcase the familiarity and ease around each song, giving each refrain a clear sentiment." In addition, he wrote, " Songs in the Dark is a nostalgic exercise for Wainwright and Roche, to reconnect to their childhood songs and perhaps re-imagine them for their children. For a listener, it is an interesting Appearance into the music that is in Wainwright's household, the sound that shapes and informs one of the most talented musical families. "Jude Rogers of The Guardian called the album" a beautiful, very interesting thing " € and the London duo's performance "was strong because of the different sounds the sisters created a strange miracle together.Martha was flirtatious but also fleshy and muscular, while Lucy's ring came out like a bright and clear bell. This combination gave the song... a remarkable sound , a frightening edge, and a voice far from polishing off sibling bands like Staves. "Rogers noted some mistakes during the concert, but wrote," When the brothers were singing i together, everything else is forgotten. "

The Herald 's Kim Mayo says the album cover is done "to win the effect, in the voice of the brothers' in perfect harmony". Mayo scored eight of the ten songs and called "El Condor Pasa" as the most successful song on the album, saying "Prairie Lullaby's opening" is "equally beautiful" and the song "Runs in the Family "," All the Pretty Little Horses "and" End of the Rainbow "are" rare treats. "Andy Gill from The Independent gave the album four out of five stars and quipped," If an album is worthy nicknamed 'charming', here it is. "He calls the duo's harmony" fascinating "in general, and specifically notes their" arrogant "voice on" Prairie Lullaby. "Gill also praised Lily and Sylvan Lanken's contribution to" Long Lankin ". > The Wall Street Journal 's Eric Danton says the voices of the sisters, especially on "El Condor Pasa", "[interlock] are so intimately intimately".
