Development

The company opened its Art Deco-style factory The Chocolate Works in 1926, and began launching new products. These include Apple Chocolate Dessert (1926), Terry's All Gold (1931) and Chocolate Orange (1932). At the beginning of World War II, candied production was immediately stopped. The factory was taken over by F. Hills and Sons of Manchester as a shadow factory to produce and repair aircraft propellers. With factories handed back to post-war firms, production is difficult because of the continued allotment in the UK, and limited imports of raw cocoa. In 1954, the production of chocolate apples was removed for increased production of chocolate oranges.

In the North American market, where it has had various importers for years, it was sold briefly as a Tobler product (maker of Toblerone).

Orange chocolate appeared in the South Korean market at the GS25 supermarket chain in 2017.

Since 2005 and the closure of Terry's plant in York, Chocolate Orange products have been produced near Jankowice, Poland.

In 1979, Terry launched Chocolate Lemon, but was withdrawn three years later.

Structure

The Terry's Chocolate Orange consists of an orange-shaped balls mixed with orange oil, divided into 20 segments, similar to the original orange, and wrapped in orange-colored paper. When bundled, the segments stick together in the middle; Therefore, before unpacking, the balls are traditionally tapped firmly on hard surfaces to cause separate segments to each other (dubbed "Tap and Open Division" or "Spanking and Unpacking").

Spin-off

There are a number of spin-off products, currently including:

  • Chocolate Orange bar : a six-segment bar, originally produced with a fine vertical segment (similar to a Toblerone rod), then, later, with a textured segment that mimics traditional orange shapes.
  • Chocolate Orange minis : a small segment bag
  • Egg White Orange Chocolate : brown white-brown orange egg-shaped version available for one Easter
  • Segments : individual segments of chocolate in different flavors, including: milk chocolate, bloated rice, bee hives, cornflakes, white chocolate and "double chunks of plated milk and dark chocolate, all seasoned with orange oil.
  • Mini Egg Segsation : a brown egg wrapped in foil in the same taste as Segsations, for Easter
  • Chocolate Orange - Egg & amp; Spoon : milk chocolate egg filled with orange filling fondant (similar to Creme Egg Cadbury)

Ads

Chocolate Orange products are known for their unusual marketing, which is usually mostly around Christmas. At one time it was estimated that Chocolate Orange was found in the tenth British Christmas stockings. French actress Dawn has headed many campaigns for the brand, often in the proposed scene defending and hiding "her" Chocolate Orange from others. Well-known marketing phrases include:

  • Tap and open (because it's replaced with "whack and open it" )
  • This does not belong to Terry, it's mine
  • Do not tap... Stop it!

Newer ads (after rebranding) do not display French and contain new slogans "Spherical but not round for long" (some include the Countdown theme song). Latest ad campaigns in the United Kingdom showcase situations where people try to break up their Terry's Chocolate Orange segment in addition to the slogan Destroy it to pieces, like the pieces ".
