Plot

The Barrett family - Lacy's mother, Daniel's father, Jesse's eldest son, and Sammy's younger son - live in a quiet suburban street in an unnamed city of America. Daniel is currently unemployed, placing the burden of supporting the family with Lacy, who works as a real estate agent. Both of their sons enjoy a happy relationship and communicate with each other from their bed through a walkie-talkie.

A number of strange events happened to the family. At night, the contents of the kitchen are rearranged in strange configurations. The home alarm is off when it detects that all entry points are being violated simultaneously. Sammy suffered a fit while playing soccer and Lacy was shocked when hundreds of birds suddenly crashed into the house. One night Lacy was awakened by a voice from Sammy's room. When he goes to examine him, through the darkness he sees the figure standing on his bed. He turned on the light to find an empty space. Sammy was found walking away from home but can not remember going. Lacy, Daniel and Jesse each suffered catatonic episodes and regained conscious memory from their experience. Strange symbols were found on the bodies of Jesse and Sammy.

Deeply troubled by the various phenomena that hit families and homes, Lacy began searching for answers online and found articles that linked some of the things they were experiencing with UFOs and alien abduction reports. Daniel installed security cameras all over the house. He reviewed the recording of the night and frame by frame analysis revealed three dark figures standing on their bed while they slept. Now believing that there are extraterrestrial forces at work, Lacy and Daniel seek specialist help, Edwin Pollard, who calls the creature "The Grays." Pollard tells them that many others are suffering the same fate as Barretts, with most cases ending with kidnapping of children. Edwin warns Barretts that the person who was first shown by Gray is the kidnapped person and that they should be very protective of Sammy, who he believes has been "elected."

Daniel bought a shotgun while Lacy bought an aggressive guard dog. The family spent July 4 up the window of the house, then dinner and nostalgic about the happy times. Suddenly, the house lights started flashing and the dog began to bark violently. Lacy sends the boy up and stands outside the door. Lacy heard the TV in her bedroom light up. He walks toward her, unaware of being standing right behind her, and trapped in her room. Daniel took Jesse and Sammy to his room and Lacy where they blockaded themselves and huddled together on the bed. TV starts flickering again and the creatures - now declared to be Grays - manifest in the room. Jesse blacks out and experienced hallucinations in which his father committed suicide while standing on the body of his bloody mother. Seeing his brother, Jesse chases after Sammy before getting back up in the hallway over his house. The Gray appears in front of him and he disappears with them in a flash of light, the rest of the family is helpless to help.

Three months later, Lacy and Daniel are suspects in Jesse's disappearance, and have moved into an apartment. Pollard swiftly cut newspaper articles about Jesse's disappearance and hung him on the wall with pictures of other lost children. Since Lacy was experiencing old things, she found the pictures that Jesse pulled as a child who showed Gray around her. He was late to realize that it was Jesse, not Sammy, where the first Grays showed interest, and that he was the one who had been chosen. The feedback then radiated from the nearest walkie-talkie when Lacy and Sammy both heard the faint sound of Jesse calling out Sammy's name.
