After leaving L.A. Express in 1976, Robben Ford recorded his solo album, The Inside Story with the band which later became Yellowjackets.

In 1977, Ford was one of half a dozen or more session players asked to play guitar solo for the song Steely Dan "Peg." In the end, the group went with a version by Jay Graydon instead. In 2006, a tribute album for Steely Dan, The Royal Dan , was released, with Ford covering "Peg" in his own style.

Guitar

Ford considers his first good electric is a Starfire Guild III with a single florentine piece. He uses Gibson L-5 when he plays with Charlie Musselwhite and Ford Band, though he never thought it was a great guitar. While playing with Jimmy Witherspoon, Ford trades L-5, plus $ 200, for Super 400. When Ford started playing with L.A. Express and Joni Mitchell, he uses 1958 Gibson dot-neck 335.

After the Ford album Talk to Your Daughter was released in 1988, Robben used Robben Ford Signature guitar model made in collaboration with Dan Smith of Fender and produced in Japan between 1987 and 1993. The guitar was based on the Fender Master Series Esprit Ultra produced from 1983 to 1986 in Japan. In 1987, the new management at Fender officially produced the first Robben Ford Signature guitar. In 1994, guitar production was transferred from Japan to Fender Custom Shop. Three models are produced: Ultra FM (with carved top maple), Ultra SP (with carved tapered peaks), and Elite FM (with carved maple tops). Guitar lines continued to be produced until 2002 when stopped by Fender.

Sometimes he played Fender Telecaster 1960, Gibson Les Pauls, or Gibson SG in 1963. Ford also has other guitars including Epiphone Riviera 1966 (with original Bigsby tremolo removed and replaced with tailpiece stops).

In a 1-6 May 2017 tour ending in Niagara Falls NY, Ford made its debut in 1953 recently acquired Gibson Les Paul.

Amplifiers

Robben Ford uses Dumble Amplifiers and Celestion G12-65 speakers. In 1983, Alexander Dumble made the first Special Overdrive Robben Dumble (serial # 002) for Robben. Alexander is the owner of serial # 001.

When traveling overseas he prefers to take his Dumble, but will sometimes use the Fender Super Reverb or Fender Twin amplifier.
