Etimologi dan sejarah

Shalwar

shalwar (Persian: ????? ?, Urdu: ????? ?) in Arabic, and much pronounced as ? alv? r/shalvaar (Turkish: ? alvar , Punjabi: ?? , Gujarati: ????? , Hindi: ????? ), salwar/salowar (Bengali: ???????? ) and selwar (Sylheti) is a form of baggy pants that preceded the Christian era. They are commonly used in Muslim countries but also extensively in the Greek countryside (and other places in the Balkans that were influenced by the Ottoman Turks) before World War II.

Transliteration starts from Urdu, Lahnda, Persian, Pashto, Turkish using "sh". Salwar is the most commonly used spelling in India. Transliteration starting from Punjabi often makes a hissing sound in early salwar/shalwar as "s". Both spellings are found in general English usage. The spelling of shalwar seems to be most common in Canada and the UK, and is a preferred spelling in the Oxford English Dictionary .

Kameez

Initially qamis (Arabic: ???? ?, translit.Ã, qam ?? , maybe from Latin, see camisole), kameez (Persian: ???? ?, Urdu: ???? ?, Hindi: ? ???? ), known in Bengali as usj (Bengali: < span lang = "bn"> ????? ) and in Sylheti as usz is a tunic of varying lengths. Clothes cut like kameez can be found in many cultures. According to Dorothy K. Burnham, of the Royal Ontario Museum, a "fine shirt," woven with a piece on a weft-weighted loom, was replaced in early Roman times with a cloth knitted on a vertical loom and carefully cut off so as not to waste- waste cloth. The 10th century cotton shirt taken from the Egyptian desert is cut like a contemporary Egyptian kameez or djellaba or jellabiya.

While the Arabic word transliteration better use "q" because of the use of Q? F (? ), that language then imports words, such as Urdu, Hindi and Persian using "k".

Men often wear vests over their qameez known as sadri (also called Waskat or bandi ).

Dupatta

Hindi: dupatta hi "> ?????? , Urdu: ????? ?) or chunri , known as o? na in Bengali: ????? , and unna in Sylheti is a scarf-like scarf and very important for many women's outfits of Indian subcontinent. It is worn with shalwar and kameez but only by women. It is a form that evolved from ancient Uttariya India and is part of the Gagra choli costume. Dupatta is used in many regional styles throughout India, the most common style since the early Middle Ages is to multiply dupatta at one end and tuck it in front of the ghagra (or lehenga) and wrap it around the waist and over the shoulder or head, similar to the way the sari used. Dupatta is traditionally seen as a symbol of simplicity because its main purpose is as a veil.

Shalwar is wide at the top but very close to the feet and gathered at the ankle. Suthan and kurta suit

The older shalwar kameez varieties of the Punjab region are the Punjab suthan and kurta suits. The Punjabi suthan is a local variation of the strictly old svasthana tight pants that have been used in the Punjab region since ancient periods and worn with tunics called strictly varbana.

The Punjabi Suthan is arranged in webbing and uses large amounts of material (traditional colored cotton with vertical silk lines, called sussi) up to 20 meters depending on many folds. Suthan ends up at the ankle with a tight band that distinguishes suthan from shalwar. The modern equivalent of the loose Punjabi sutta is cowl pants and dhoti shalwars that have many folds.

Several versions of Punjabi suthan tighten from knee to ankle (the rest of svasthana). If a tight band is not used, the suthan end fits around the ankle. The Jodhpuri pants made in the 1870s by Sir Pratap Singh of Jodhpur offer a striking resemblance of a fine line with centuries-old Punjabi sutth, though churidar is the source. Suthan tight pantaloon style is very popular with Indian Cavalry in the 19th century and early 20th century; they are dyed in multani mutti or mitti (clay/earth fuller), which gives a yellow color on the clothes.

Kurta is the remaining 11th-century female kurtaka which is a shirt that extends to the center of the body with a side slit worn in northern India that remains the traditional dress for women in Punjab, although longer than the kurtaka. Suthan is traditionally used with long kurta but can also be worn with short kurti or skirt. The modern kurta version can be knee length. The head scarf is also traditionally long but again, the modern version is shorter.

Dogri kurta and suthan

Clothes in Jammu are Dogri kurta and suthan. When the tight parts of suthan, up to the knees, have some close fitting folds, suthan is referred to as Dogri or suthan pants, in Jammu, and churidar suthan in the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh region.
