Plot

In 2259 Captain James T. Kirk was removed from the command of the USS Enterprise shipboard for violating the Main Instructions after exposing the ship to the primitive inhabitants of the Nibiru planet to save them, and Spock, from a violent volcano eruption. Admiral Christopher Pike was reinstated as commander with Kirk demoted to the rank of Commander and first officer. The Spock commander was transferred to another ship. Shortly thereafter, the installation of Section 31 in London was bombed by Starfleet operator John Harrison. Harrison attacked Starfleet Headquarters in a jumpship during an emergency meeting about the situation, killing Pike and other senior officers. Kirk disables the jump, but Harrison hauls to Kronos, the homeworld of the hostile Klingon.

Admiral Alexander Marcus returns Kirk and Spock to Enterprise with an order to kill Harrison using a new long-distance stealth torpedo. Chief Engineer of Montgomery Scott objects to allow untested torpedoes on board without knowing their specifications; when he was rejected, he resigned. Kirk commissioned Pavel Chekov to replace Scotty. On the way to Kronos, Entrepreneurship 'warp capability becomes inactive. Kirk leads the team with Spock and Uhura onto the planet in a small lander, where they are ambushed by a Klingon patrol that orders them to land. Uhura leaves the landing craft to speak with Klingon. They decide to kill Uhura, but Harrison kills them. After the battle, Harrison asked Kirk to tell him the torpedo number on board the Enterprise, giving up when Spock told him.

Dr. Leonard McCoy and daughter Marcus, Dr. Carol Marcus, opening a torpedo on the order of Harrison, reveals a man in a cryogenic stasis. After further investigation, all other experimental torpedoes were revealed to both contain cryogenic frozen humans. Harrison was taken to a ship brig, where he revealed his true identity as Khan, a supernatural genetic engineering man built by Admiral Marcus from centuries of suspended animation to develop sophisticated weapons. Khan reveals that Marcus sabotaged the warp drive, intending to Klingon to destroy the ship after firing on Kronos, creating an act of war by Klingon Empire. Khan also gave Kirk a set of coordinates. Kirk contacts Scotty on Earth and asks him to investigate. Scotty finds the coordinates leading to the secret Starfleet facility near Jupiter.

Enterprise was intercepted by the much larger Starfleet warship, USS Vengeance , commanded by Admiral Marcus. Marcus demanded that Kirk give Khan, but Enterprise escaped to Earth to expose it. After Vengeance disables Enterprise near the Moon, Carol reveals her presence aboard. Marcus forcibly transports Carol to Vengeance before ordering Enterprise Obligations '. Kirk offers Khan and himself for the life of his crew, but Marcus refuses Kirk's offer, revealing that he never intended to avoid them and order Vengeance to attack. Vengeance suddenly lost power after being sabotaged by Scotty, who infiltrated the ship. With the transportation down, Kirk and Khan, with the latest knowledge about the design of warships, space-hopping into Vengeance. Spock contacts him older, who warns that Khan is cruel and unreliable and that the older Khan's self is only defeated at a terrible cost. After capturing the bridge, Khan defeats Kirk, Scott and Carol, kills Marcus, and takes over Vengeance.

Khan demanded that Spock return his crew in exchange for the Company clerk. Spock obeyed him but secretly got rid of Khan's frozen crew from torpedoes and weapons of warheads. Khan radiated Kirk, Scott and Carol aboard the Enterprise ship, but betrayed their agreement by attacking Enterprise; However, Vengeance is turned off when the torpedo is detonated. With both stars captured in Earth's gravity, they fall to the surface. Kirk enters the radioactive reactor chamber to realign the winding cores, sacrificing himself to save the ship.

Khan crashed Vengeance into downtown San Francisco in an effort to destroy Starfleet's headquarters. Khan escaped from the ruins so Spock ferried him in pursuit. McCoy found that Khan's blood had regenerative properties that could save Kirk. Spock chases Khan through the city and will kill him, but Uhura stops him. Khan's blood revived Kirk. One year later, Kirk was speaking at the Enterprise ' endorsement ceremony. Khan was sealed in a cryogenic pod and kept with his colleagues. The company crew commenced a five-year exploration mission.

    Production

    Development

In June 2008, it was reported that Paramount Pictures was interested in bringing in producers from J. J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci for the sequel. In March 2009, it was reported that these five producers had agreed to produce the film, with a script written by Orci and Kurtzman (with the addition of Lindelof). The initial scenario is said to be completed in Christmas 2009 for release 2011. Kurtzman and Orci started writing the manuscript in June 2009, initially intending to divide the movie into two parts. Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock who plays an old version of the character in the 2009 movie, says he will not appear in the movie. Abrams is reportedly considering William Shatner for his sequel.

In 2010, the release date of June 29, 2012, is set, with Lindelof announcing he has started working on scripts with Kurtzman and Orci. Pre-production is set for January 2011, although Burk says the actual shooting may start in the spring or summer. Actor Zachary Quinto later said that these reports are incorrect. Lindelof compares the sequel with The Dark Knight .

Abrams, Kurtzman, and Orci say that choosing a criminal is difficult; according to Abrams, "the universe created by Roddenberry is so vast that it is difficult to say one thing that stands out". They also discussed the possibility of Khan Noonien Singh and Klingon. Kurtzman and Lindelof say they have "ravaged" the story (creating an outline); instead of a sequel, it will be a stand-alone movie. Abrams admitted in December 2010 that there was still no script.

In January 2011, Abrams said he has not decided whether he will direct, because he has not seen the script. Paramount Pictures then approached him, requesting that the sequel be in 3D. Abrams said that the film would not be taken in 3D, but was filmed in 2D and converted during postproduction. He's also interested in filming on IMAX: "IMAX is my favorite format; I'm a big fan." In February, Orci tweeted that he (with Lindelof and Kurtzman) plans to submit the script in March 2011. Although the script has not been completed as scheduled, Paramount begins to finance pre-production; A similar situation in Jack Ryan's next movie means that Chris Pine will film the sequel to Star Trek first. In April, Orci said in WonderCon that the first draft script had been completed. Abrams told MTV that when he finished his movie, Super 8, he would turn his attention to the sequel Tracks .

Although the manuscript has been completed, uncertainty about the extent to which the involvement of Abrams led to the film being pushed back six months ahead of its scheduled June 2012 release schedule. Other factors that hinder the release, which ultimately pushed it further are high budgets and the overall difficulty of finding actors to fit their roles. In June, Abrams insisted that his next project would be his sequel, noting that he preferred the movie to be better than ready with the scheduled release date. Simon Pegg, who plays the role of Scotty, said in an interview that he thought the filming would begin in the later part of the year. Abrams said he would prioritize the story and character of the film during the initial release date. In September, Abrams agreed to direct the film, with players from previous films repeating their respective roles for the winter release of 2012 or summer 2013. In October, Orci said that the location guides were underway, and a series of comic books ( which Orci will become creative director) will "portray" the film. Into Darkness was given a revision of the 2013 release date, and Michael Giacchino confirmed that he would return to write the score.

Lindelof says that Khan is considered a character they need to use at some point, given that "he has such strong gravity in the Tracks universe, we might spend more energy, not putting it in this movie. rather than vice versa. "The reference to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was eventually added to the script, but Lindelof, Orci, and Kurtzman" always wary of the intermediate lines of 're-concept' and 'direct ripoff'. " Orci and Kurtzman say they want a movie that will work on its own and as a sequel, not using ideas from before Star Trek just works "because you think people will love it". Orci notes that while trying to create the "gigantic image" needed by the summer blockbuster, Kurtzman suggested scenes where Enterprise rose from the ocean. With that as their starting point (and Lindelof) comes with a cold opening in Nibiru, which combines action and comedy and is isolated from the main story in a tribute to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Actor Benicio del Toro is reportedly wanted as a villain, and has met with Abrams to discuss the role; However, he then bowed. In 2011, Alice Eve and Peter Weller agreed on their role. Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke agrees to an unknown role, reported as "a family man with a wife and a young girl". DemiÃÆ'¡n Bichir auditioned for the role of villain, but as reported by Variety on January 4, 2012, Benedict Cumberbatch was cast.

    Filming

Into Darkness started major photography on January 12, 2012, with a release date scheduled for May 16, 2013. Cinematographer Dan Mindel recorded the film using a combination of 35mm anamorphic film and 15 IMAX perforation cameras. About 30 minutes of films were taken in IMAX format, while some other scenes were also shot at 8 perforation holes 65mm. Into Darkness was released in 3D. On February 24, 2012, a picture of the set appears Benedict Cumberbatch characters in a fight with Spock. Edgar Wright directs one shot into the film. Production ends in May 2012.

Filming was performed at locations in Los Angeles, California, and around the area at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore. Additional locations include Paramount Studios in Hollywood, Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Crystal Cathedral at Garden Grove, and Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Several shots were made in Iceland.

Marc Okrand, the Klingon language developer, provides the Klingon dialog with coaching from the built-in linguist. The dialogue does not create a cohesive sense following the new editing and dialogue built and dubbed during post-production.

    Title

On September 10, 2012, Paramount confirmed the movie title as Star Trek Into Darkness . Abrams has indicated that unlike some previous films in the franchise, the second Star Trek will not include numbers in the title. This decision was made to avoid repetition of a sequel beginning with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, or making a confusing jump from Star Trek to Star Trek 12 >. Lindelof discussed the team's struggle to agree on the title: "There's more to the conversation about what we'll call it than actually taking the picture... No word comes after the colon after Star Trek is cool. it's Star Trek: Insurrection or First Contact is not a good degree, it's just that everyone being turned off when it comes to Tracks is represented by colons ". From the proposed title, he jokes that he prefers Star Trek: Transformer 4 best because the title is "technically available".

    Music

Composer Michael Giacchino composed the incidental music of the film. Into Darkness is the collaboration of Giacchino's fourth film with Abrams, which included Star Trek (2009). The movie scores were recorded at Sony Scoring Stage in Culver City, California from March 5 to April 3, 2013. The soundtrack album was digitally released on May 14, 2013, and made available on May 28th through VarÃÆ'¨se Sarabande. The Score contains the original Star Trek theme by Alexander Courage.

On April 24, 2013, it was announced that British singer Bo Bruce and Irish songwriter Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol have collaborated on a song for the soundtrack of the movie "The Rage That's In Us All". Australian songwriter and producer, Robert Conley, wrote the song with Penelope Austin, "The Dark Collide".

The expanded soundtrack album was released on July 28, 2014, limited to 6,000 copies.

    Themes

On May 10, 2013, Cho, Pegg, and Eve were interviewed at The Bob Rivers Show to promote the film. The river asked about the title: "The title of Star Trek Into Darkness shows a kind of unpleasant change, obviously". Eve suggested that Pegg discuss the theme of terrorism, and Pegg was obliged: "I think this is a very recent movie, and it reflects certain things that are happening in our own head right now, the idea that our enemy may be running between us. not necessarily on the other side of the ocean, you know John Harrison, the character of Benedict Cumberbatch, ambiguous, you know? We [the characters in the movie] do not know who to support.Sometimes, Kirk, he seems to behave in exactly the same way [ Harrison].They were both motivated by revenge and Into Darkness in the title was less an idea of a new trend than po-faced, sort of, it was all a very boring treatment of basically childlike stories This is more about Kirk's uncertainty. "Cho agrees with Captain Kirk's characterization:" It's a leadership crisis. "

An important scene near the end when Kirk entered the reactor room functioned as a reversal of the same important scene at Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Originally conceived as a repetition of the Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Kurtzman and Orci define the main theme of Into Darkness as "how far we will take revenge and justice upon the enemies that scare us. How far should we go from our values? "They add that running away from personal values is a personal struggle, in which" the blood of the enemy is within us, we are the enemy, we must not surrender to it, we are equal. "

    Distribution

Dolby Laboratories and Paramount announced that Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in Dolby Atmos, with Andy Nelson and Anna Behlmer handling the mix with supervision from Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood. The film was released on May 9, 2013, on the international market and May 16, 2013, in the United States.

    Marketing

As part of the Abrams-designed contest after the release of Super 8 (2011), a reward for answering a series of questions will be a direct role for two people at Into Darkness . He debuted three frames of movies on Conan on October 4, 2012, showing what he described as Spock "on a volcano, in this crazy suit". The official poster for the film was released two months later on December 3, 2012, showing a mysterious figure (who is considered a Benedictine Cumberbatch villain) standing on a pile of burning debris looking over what appears to be a corrupted London; he stood in the hole-shaped Starfleet emblem, blown out from the side of the building.

About nine minutes of the opening sequence is shown before the IMAX presentation of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, released in the United States on December 14, 2012. Alice Eve, Cumberbatch, and Burk launched the IMAX prologue in London, England on December 14th. The two-minute teaser was released on iTunes Movie Trailers on December 17th. The promotion marks the beginning of a viral marketing campaign, with hidden links that drive fans to film-related websites. A 30-second teaser aired February 3, 2013 during a stadium blackout from the Super Bowl XLVII. On the same day, Paramount released an app for Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone that lets users unlock tickets for shows two days before the movie release date.

An international trailer was released on March 21, 2013, with an embedded URL revealing an online only online poster. On April 8th, Paramount released the last international sheet featuring only Benedict Cumberbatch characters. On March 24, 2013, at 21:30, a pack of 30 mini-quadrotors equipped with LED lights drew the Star Trek logo above London. This choreography marks the beginning of Paramount UK marketing campaign for Star Trek Into Darkness. It was coordinated with World Earth Fund (WWF) Earth Hour event and conducted and developed by Ars Electronica Futurelab from Linz (Austria) in cooperation with Ascending Technologies of Munich (Germany).

On April 12, 2013, iTunes Movie Trailers unveils a final domestic sheet featuring USS Enterprise , and announces that the last US domestic trailer will be released on April 16th. In the days leading up to the release trailer, character posters featuring Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and Harrison were released on iTunes. Paramount seeks to broaden the appeal of films to international audiences, areas where Star Trek and other science fiction films generally perform poorly. Into Darkness is dedicated to post 11/9 veterans. J.J. Abrams is connected to The Mission Continues, and part of the film's website is dedicated to the organization.

    Tour promotion

The players (except for Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, and Peter Weller) participated in the May 2013 press event. On May 7, Pegg appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! . On May 8, Quinto was interviewed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon . He was followed on May 10 by Cumberbatch (who told Fallon that his fans were called "Cumberbitches"; Fallon denied that he was called "Falpals") and on May 17 by Saldana. Saldana said that he lobbied Abrams for four years: "If we make a sequel, Uhura needs to kick his ass". On May 9th, Cumberbatch appeared on Late Show with David Letterman .

On May 10, Cho, Pegg, and Eve held a radio interview on The Bob Rivers Show. They discussed approaching parts of work already controlled by the previous generation of actors, agreeing that they will remain with the franchise as long as it lasts. That night, Chris Pine appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman ; Letterman shows the robot scroll gag in a black-and-white film before showing a clip of Into Darkness . Pine said that she had to gain weight for Captain Kirk's role.

One story told by members during the promotion relates to a joke originally made by Pegg, which he then notes disproportionately. While filming at the National Ignition Facility, Pegg and Pine (with the help of crew) tricked the actors who came to believe there was "ambient radiation" at the scene and they had to wear "neutron cream" to avoid being burnt by it. Cumberbatch was tricked into signing the release (which was meant to give a joke, but he signed it without reading it), while Urban and Cho were tricked into recording public service announcements about the need for neutron cream.

On May 13, Abrams appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart , and on May 16, Pine appeared on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show . On May 14, Abrams, Zachary Quinto, Pine, and Alice Eve appeared on The Urgant Show in Russia.

    Release

    box office

Into Darkness earned $ 13.5 million on its opening day in the United States and Canada, lower than Star Trek $ 30.9 million. The film earned $ 22 million on the following Friday, also lower than its predecessor's income four years earlier ($ 26 million). It generated $ 70.6 million during its opening weekend, ending at the top of the US box office (above The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3). Total weekend earnings are $ 84.1 million, including grosses that show early. Although this is lower than Paramount's projected box-office projections, studio vice chairman Rob Moore says he is "very happy" with the sequel's performance.

A few weeks after its release, the film grossed $ 147 million at the overseas box office, surpassing the lifetime of its predecessor's international revenues. Into Darkness reached the top spot of China's box office with $ 25.8 million gross, tripling the overall revenue of the previous film during its opening weekend. Star Trek Into Darkness ended the North American theatrical drama on September 12, 2013, with a box office total of $ 228,778,661, which placed it as the 11th best-selling movie for 2013. It earned $ 467,365,246 worldwide, ranking at 14th place for 2013, and making it the best-selling movie franchise.

Scott Mendelson of Forbes argues that the box office performance of the film is the result of Paramount's inability to sell the basic components of the movie story, and the inclusion of Khan "for little reason other than marketing and then spending the next year or more lying to everyone and claiming the criminals are not in image... With no added value element to sell, Paramount was forced to create a generic campaign based around Benedict Cumberbatch as "Generic Bad Guy", so excitement never happened... This is adding the idea that just holding back the element of the same story just by giving an amazing plot twist... and it makes fans and movie viewers less passionate about Star Trek 2 than they were four, three, or even two years ago. " Counting on all costs, Deadline Hollywood estimates that the film generated a profit of $ 29.9 million.

    Critical reception

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an 86% approval rating, based on 271 reviews, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The site consensus reads, "Looks spectacular and appropriate action, Star Trek Into Darkness is the installment of rocks in an honorable science fiction franchise, though it is not as fresh as its predecessor. " At Metacritic, the film has a score of 72 out of 100, based on 43 critics, which shows "favorable general reviews". It receives the average value of "A" from market research firm CinemaScore.

Critics call it an "exciting adventure" and "stunning action adventure in the sky". Cumberbatch's appearance drew praise from critics, with Peter Travers from Rolling Stone calling it a "tour de force to reckon with" and his character "a villain for centuries". Joe Neumaier of New York Daily News wrote that Cumberbatch delivered "one of the best blockbuster villains in recent memory". Jonathan Romney of The Independent recorded Cumberbatch's voice, saying it was "a sepulchrally resonance that could be synthesized from a tone of Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and Alan Rickman conducting an elocution contest under the well". The New York Times praised the presence of the screen: "He combines Byronic's charisma with an impatient and arrogant intelligence that seems to raise I.Q. every time he's on screen."

However, not all reviews are positive; The Independent says the film will be "underwhelm even Trekkies". Lou Lumenick of the New York Post gave the film one and a half stars (out of four), saying it had a "weak plot" and "a surprisingly cheesy special effect for big-movie events". A.O. Scott dismissed the movie on The New York Times: "This is an uninspired hackwork, and the frequent appearance of blue lens flares does not make this film a personal statement."

The film was criticized for a scene with character actress Alice Eve Carol Marcus in her underwear, called "completely unnecessary" and "haphazard". Screenwriter and producer Damon Lindelof apologizes on Twitter for the scene: "I am responsible and will be more considerate in the future". In Conan , Abrams discusses this issue by debuting a deleted scene from the character of Benedict Cumberbatch actor, Khan is in the shower. Eve discussed the underwear controversy at the 2013 Las Vegas Star Trek Convention and said, "I did not know it would cause such a scene, I did not feel exploited."

Despite the acknowledged performance of Cumberbatch, Christian Blauvelt of Hollywood.com criticizes casting actors as Khan Noonien Singh, saying that the characters have been "forgotten", since Khan is an explicitly non-white character Star Trek canon introduced as Sikh and former ruler of much of Eastern Eurasia). There are similar allegations about washing by fans and American Sikhs, with Star Trek: Voyager Playing Garrett Wang tweet "Cumberbatch casting is a mistake on the part of the producer I do not criticize the actor or his talent, just casting". George Takei, native to Hikaru Sulu, is also disappointed with casting, as he thinks it would be better to throw Cumberbatch not as an established criminal like Khan but as a new character. At Trekmovie.com, co-producer and co-screenwriter Bob Orci talks about casting Khan: "Basically, as we go through the casting process and we start sharpening the movie theme, it becomes uncomfortable for me to support beating against anyone of color, especially one of the descendants of the Middle East or whoever raised it.One of the points of the film is that we have to be careful about criminals in the US, not another race.'A comic in- canon has been created to change the changes that exist in ethnicity in this film.

In an interview with Buzzfeed two years after the film's release, Abrams discusses some of the film's shortcomings. He thinks that the dynamics of Kirk and Spock's relationship in the movie "are not very clear." To maintain the secrecy of Khan's identity before the release of the film, Abrams feels he "is trying to preserve the fun for the audience, and not only tells them something the character did not learn for 45 minutes into the movie, so the audience will not so precede it." In the end , Abrams admits that "there are some things I'm not sure of.... Any movie... has a fundamental conversation going on that long, and [for Into Darkness ,] I do not" I have that.... [The problem with the plot] is not anyone's fault except mine, or, to be honest, anyone's problem except mine. [Manuscript] is a little collection of scenes written by my friends.... However, I find myself frustrated by my choice, and can not hang a hat on the undisputed main story thread. So then I found myself on the film basically dancing as well as I can to try and make the sequence as easy as possible.... I will never say that I do not think that the movie was finally successful. But I felt it was not working as well as I should have made some better decisions before we started filming. "

    Home media

Star Trek Into Darkness was released as a digital download on August 20, 2013. It was first released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D in the UK on September 2 and in the United States and Canada at 10 September. Sainsbury's UK retailer has an exclusive edition with a second bonus DVD disc containing 33 minutes of additional features. There is also a set of Special Limited Edition Blu-ray available with models on the USS Vengeance stand as seen in this movie.

In North America, the release is divided into exclusive retailers. Best Buy Retailers have an exclusive Blu-ray edition with 30 minutes of additional content, available on disk in Canada, and through the CinemaNow streaming service in the United States. The Target Blu-ray Edition also has 30 minutes additional content different from Best Buy. The online retailer's iTunes version comes with audio comments for movies that are not available in exclusive resellers. Deleted scene collection is available exclusively through the second Xbox SmartGlass display app paired with the Xbox Video release of the movie.

The split of special features between various retailers has attracted criticism from fans. In particular, Digital Editor Bits, Bill Hunt said that "taking half full or more of the disk-based special features created for major Blu-ray releases and transmitting them to the wind as exclusive retailers, forcing your customers to keep expensive hunting is, I ask sorry, really outrageous, Seriously, if Paramount will treat Blu-ray customers like this, they should get out of business altogether or better yet, plant all their titles for a third party license that will treat these films and customers Blu-ray in general with greater attention and respect. "A few weeks after posting his article, Hunt himself was invited by Paramount to discuss the issue of delivering the movie's specific features to different retail partners. He suggested "[puts] alongside the actual special edition that should have been delivered from the beginning, with all the additions scattered across various retailers, including enhanced audio comments, plus all-new content just for this release.. [and] offering an IMAX version of the movie... "This eventually resulted in the Star Trek release: The Compendium, a set of boxes that includes all the exclusive exclusive special features of the previous retailer, plus additional features for such gag reel, along with theatrical release Star Trek (2009) and IMAX 2D versions of Star Trek Into Darkness .

Both of Abram ' Star Trek are among the first titles released by Paramount Home Media Distribution for the Ultra HD Blu-ray format, and are widely hailed as the title of reference quality.
