Star Trek Into Darkness was released as a digital download on August 20, 2013. It was first released on DVD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray 3D in the UK on September 2 and in the United States and Canada at 10 September. Sainsbury's UK retailer has an exclusive edition with a second bonus DVD disc containing 33 minutes of additional features. There is also a set of Special Limited Edition Blu-ray available with models on the USS Vengeance stand as seen in this movie.
In North America, the release is divided into exclusive retailers. Best Buy Retailers have an exclusive Blu-ray edition with 30 minutes of additional content, available on disk in Canada, and through the CinemaNow streaming service in the United States. The Target Blu-ray Edition also has 30 minutes additional content different from Best Buy. The online retailer's iTunes version comes with audio comments for movies that are not available in exclusive resellers. Deleted scene collection is available exclusively through the second Xbox SmartGlass display app paired with the Xbox Video release of the movie.
The split of special features between various retailers has attracted criticism from fans. In particular, Digital Editor Bits, Bill Hunt said that "taking half full or more of the disk-based special features created for major Blu-ray releases and transmitting them to the wind as exclusive retailers, forcing your customers to keep expensive hunting is, I ask sorry, really outrageous, Seriously, if Paramount will treat Blu-ray customers like this, they should get out of business altogether or better yet, plant all their titles for a third party license that will treat these films and customers Blu-ray in general with greater attention and respect. "A few weeks after posting his article, Hunt himself was invited by Paramount to discuss the issue of delivering the movie's specific features to different retail partners. [and] offering an IMAX version of the movie... "This eventually resulted in the Star Trek release: The Compendium, a set of boxes that includes all the exclusive exclusive special features of the previous retailer, plus additional features for such gag reel, along with theatrical release Star Trek (2009) and IMAX 2D versions of Star Trek Into Darkness .
Both of Abram ' Star Trek are among the first titles released by Paramount Home Media Distribution for the Ultra HD Blu-ray format, and are widely hailed as the title of reference quality.
