Plot

A dysfunctional romance and sometimes violent occurrence between Mathieu (Fernando Rey), a middle-aged, wealthy French, and a young, poor, and beautiful flamenco dancer from Sevilla, Conchita, played by Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina. The two actresses each performed unexpectedly in a separate scene, and differed not only physically, but also temperament.

Most of the movies are flashbacks that Mathieu remembers. The movie opens with Mathieu traveling by train from Sevilla to Paris. He tries to distance himself from Conchita's young lover. As Mathieu's train was ready to depart, he found that the wounded and clothed Conchita was chasing after him. From the train he poured a bucket of water over his head. She was sure this would get in her way, but she slipped into the ship.

The passengers of Mathieu's compartment witnessed his crude action. This includes a mother and daughter, a judge who happens to be a friend of Mathieu's cousin, and a dwarf psychologist. They ask about his motivation for such an act, and he then explains the history of his tumultuous relationship with Conchita. The story is motivated by terrorist bombings and shootings by left-wing groups.

Conchita, who claims to be 18 but looks older, has promised to remain a virgin until marriage. He tantalized Mathieu with sexual promises, but never allowed him to satisfy his sexual desires. At one point she went to bed with her wearing a tightly pressed canvas corset, which she could not let go of, making it impossible to have sex. Conchita's conceit caused the couple to break up and reunite repeatedly, each time frustrating and confusing Mathieu.

Finally, Mathieu finds Conchita dancing naked for tourists at the Sevilla nightclub. At first he became angry. But then, he forgave her and bought her a house. In the climactic scene, soon after moving home, Conchita refuses to let Mathieu in the gate, telling him that she hates him, and kisses it and touches him making her sick. Then, to prove his independence, he seems to start a sexual relationship with a young man in the usual view of Mathieu, though he walks away without witnessing the act. Later that night he was held at gunpoint when his car was hijacked.

After this, Conchita tries to make peace with Mathieu, insisting that sex is fake and that her "lover" is in fact a homosexual friend. However, during his explanation, Mathieu defeats him (he then says "Now I'm sure you love me"), causing his condition to be bandaged and bruises visible at the beginning of the film.

Just as fellow train passengers seemingly satisfied with this story, Conchita reappears from hiding and throws a bucket of water at Mathieu. However, the couple seems to be reconciling again as the train reaches its destination. After leaving the train, they walked hand in hand, enjoying the streets of Madrid.

Then at a mall in Paris, the loudspeakers announced that a strange alliance of extremist groups intends to sow confusion and confusion in society through terrorist attacks. The announcement added that some right-wing groups are planning to strike back. As the couple continued their journey, they passed a tailor in the shop window fixing a bloody nightgown. They start arguing only when a bomb explodes, apparently claiming their lives.

Casting

The Obsessed Object Desire is best known for the use of two actresses, Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina, in the single role of Conchita; actress switched roles in alternative scenes and sometimes even in the middle of the scene. In his autobiography, My Last Sigh (1983), BuÃÆ' Â ± uel explains (pp.Ã, 46-47) the decision to use two actresses to play Conchita:

In 1977, in Madrid, when I was desperate after an argument surrendered with an actress who had brought the shooting of Obsessed Objects to a halt, the producer, Serge Silberman, decided to leave the film altogether. A big financial loss put us under pressure until one night, when we drowned our grief at a bar, I suddenly had an idea (after two dry martinis) using two actresses in the same role, an untried tactic.. Though I made that suggestion as a joke, Silberman liked it, and the movie was saved.

This book does not identify the actress who has caused "stormy arguments," though BuÃÆ' Â ± uel makes it clear (p.Ã, 250) that she is not Carole Bouquet or Angela Molina.

In Luis BuÃÆ'Â ± uel: The Complete Films (2005), editors Bill Krohn and Paul Duncan identified the actress as Maria Schneider, writing (pp.Ã, 177-78) following the idea of using two actresses to play Conchita:

... BuÃÆ' Â ± uel finds himself proposing to Silberman when it becomes clear after three days of filming that Maria Schneider will not be able to play a role. Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina stepped in...

Particularly about BuÃÆ'  ± uel's work of two actresses to play one character, most of the critics are fascinated, as exemplified by New York Times film critic's commenter Vincent Canby, "Conchita has so changed that BuÃÆ'  ± uel has thrown two beautiful new actresses to play him - Carole Bouquet, who looks a bit like the young Rita Hayworth, as mysterious and mysterious Conchita, and Angela Molina as Conchita, the flamenco-dancing konoha [...] Conchita who goes to the bathroom to change, changes not only Mona Bouquet came in but Miss Molina came out. [...] Miss Bouquet and Miss Molina are dazzling - I do not think Buà ¥ uel has ever been so successful with new actresses. "

Other films that employ two or more actors to perform a single character include Todd Solondz Palindromes , in which eight different actors of different ages, races and genders play a 13-year-old girl named Aviva during the course of the film, and Canadian filmmaker, BP Paquette Perspective, where each of the three main actors continues to rotate the three characters they play, not only in the same scene, but sometimes during the exchange the same dialog.

Also worth noting is the Spanish actor Fernando Rey who often worked with BuÃÆ' Â ± uel in his last years. She plays Mathieu, but her voice is nicknamed by French actor Michel Piccoli.
