The Black Magician trilogy is a series of fantasy novels written by Australian writer Trudi Canavan. The books follow a girl living in a slum called Sonea who, though born and raised in the impoverished area of ââImardin, finds that she has a natural magical ability that is usually limited to the upper classes. They describe his attempts to escape being captured by the Witch's Guild and master his powers, his struggle to conform and learn magic, and ultimately his attempts to save Kyralia using a kind of banned magic. Although this series consists of only three books, it is accompanied by a prequel entitled The Magician's Apprentice and the sequel series, called The Traitor Spy trilogy. All the shared novels that share the same arrangement of Kyralia's fictional world are by fans who are often referred to as "Kyralia series".

This novel is a continuation of 'The Magician's Apprentice', five centuries later. The Magician's Guild now consists of three departments: healer, alchemist, and warrior. Sonea, a slum girl, discovered that she had magical abilities during the city's annual Hygiene, where slum dwellers were forced out of the city's outer circle and back into the slums. With the help of his friend, Cery, he is trying to avoid the capture by the Witch Guild he believes he wants to harm him. The fellowship, however, must find it to teach him to control his power, because if he is not taught this he will eventually lose complete control, kill himself and destroy some of the city. Only a magician could teach him this. Finally, on the verge of losing control, he is found and captured by one of the Guild mages, a nice man named Rothen who wants him to join their ranks. Fergun, another Wizard, is one of many who believe that slum dwellers, who have never been allowed into the Guild, should not be Magicians. He catches Cery and tries to use him to blackmail Sonea to lie to the Guild to convince them to allow her to guard it. However, his plan was thwarted when Cery was found by the Supreme Chancellor of the Guild, Akkarin. When Fergun had lost his grip on Sonea, he became clean about extortion, and Mr. Lorlen, Administrator Geng, read Sonea's mind to verify the truth and accidentally discovered that she had previously witnessed the Guild leader, Akkarin High, practicing forbidden. black magic.
Starter
Sonea started studying at Guild University as Novice but her charismatic and influential classmate, Regin, picked up another first-year Novis opinion, turning her against him. Through various means (stealing a classmate's pen and putting it into Sonea's private box, issuing rumors that she had killed someone, among other things) she tried to convince everyone, including the teachers, that she was nothing more than a thief and far below them in status. Lorlen sent Dannyl, a former Novice Rothen, to the land of Elyne adjacent to Elyne as Elyne's second ambassador, to follow Akkarin's research as a youth, trying to find where he learned black magic without letting Dannyl know what the study was for. High Mr. Akkarin discovered that Lorlen knew his secret (that Akkarin had used black magic), and by reading his mind found that Sonea and Rothen also possessed this knowledge. Akarrin claimed the guardianship of Sonea to keep their silence and he reluctantly moved to the High Lord's residence. Regin's harassment intensified until finally Sonea followed the idea given to him by Lord Dorrien, Rothen's son, and challenged Regin to duel in the Arena and win. Sonea then watched Akkarin kill a Sachakan man, and he explained that the man was a spy sent from Sachaka to kill her, though Sonea did not know if she would believe it or not.
The High Lord
A year after his duel with Regin, Sonea was still struggling with being under Akkarin's protection. Akkarin gave him the journal of a famous Architects-who, in his writings, claimed to use black magic. He also gave him a history book that did not have all references about black magic removed, which is illegal. Akkarin then took him to the city and taught him to read the mind of a Sachakan man who did not want him to know that Sachakan Wizards use black magic regularly, without knowing that the Kyralian Witch is not. The Ichani Kariko sends slaves to Imardin, Kyralia's capital, where Akkarin kills them before they find a black magic ban. Akkarin then explains to Sonea that when she was in Sachaka before becoming a High Lord, she was arrested and enslaved by Dakova, an Ichani. Through reading Akkarin's mind, Dakova discovers that the guild does not use "higher" magic (this is called black magic in Sachaka and called in Kyralia first) again. Another Sachakan wizard, Dakova's enemy teaches him black magic and asks to kill Dakova. Akkarin killed Dakova and escaped to the Guild and became High Lord. Kariko, an Ichani, brother of Dakova seeks revenge for the death of his brother. Sonea, worried about Akkarin, convinced her to teach her black magic. Later, the Guild found their use of black magic and drove them to Sachaka. Kariko discovers this and attacks Kyralia. Akkarin and Sonea sneaked back to Kyralia and to Imardin where the Guild tried, and failed, to protect the city from Sachakan. Registered for help Thieves and slum dwellers, Akkarin and Sonea defeated Ichani. In their final battle, Akkarin is mortally wounded by Kariko and dies by giving all his strength to Sonea, while fighting with Ichani. Sonea was left alone with her son. Since Sonea was the only magician with knowledge of black magic, she became the Black Witch of the Guild. He also built a care home to help people who live in slums.
