Shading coefficient (SC) is a measure of the thermal performance of glass units (panels or windows) in a building.

The nature of the sun plays an important role in the selection of glass, especially in areas or wind direction with high sun exposure. This becomes less significant in situations where direct sunlight is not a major factor (eg, windows completely shaded by overhangs).

The window design method has switched from Shading Coefficient to Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), which is defined as the fraction of actual solar radiation entering a building through the entire assembly window as heat gain (not just the glass part). Although the shading coefficients are still mentioned in the product manufacturer's literature and some industrial computer software, it is no longer mentioned as an option in a particular industrial text or building code model. Industry technical experts acknowledged the limitations of SC and pushed towards SHGC before the early 1990s.

Conversion from SC to SHGC is not always easy, as each takes into account the different mechanisms and paths of heat transfer (glass vs. window assembly only). To convert the approximate from SC to SHGC, multiply the value of SC by 0.87.
