Are You Afraid of Darkness? is a fantasy-themed fantasy Canada-American anthology television series. Original series created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and was picked up by Nickelodeon in 1991. MacHale, Kandel, and Nickelodeon teamed up with Canadian company Cinar, and as part of the deal the show was filmed in Richmond, British Columbia and in the Montreal area of Quebec, including their suburbs.

The series aired with the episode "The Tale of Twisted Claw" as a pilot on Halloween 1990 on the Canadian television network YTV and aired until June 11, 2000. The show also aired on SNICK Nickelodeon on August 15, 1992, and aired until April 20, 1996. The show success critically and commercially, garnered many awards as the series continues.

A series of resurrections with directors, writers and new players was produced by Nickelodeon from 1999 to 2000 and also aired on SNICK. The sole member of the original lineup to return for the sixth and seventh season is Tucker (Daniel DeSanto), though Gary (Ross Hull) returns for the closing show, which mainly breaks out of the established format of the show by blurring the line between the story and "reality".

Both series Are You Afraid of the Dark? revolves around a group of teenagers who call themselves "The Midnight Society". Every episode, in a secret location in the woods at night, one member will tell a scary story to the group. The real story, instead of telling it, is shown to television viewers. The story was shown between the arrival of the group at the location and their departure. Every storyteller will begin their story by saying "Submitted to the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story, (the name of the story mentioned here)", at which point he will throw a handful of "midnight dust" from a leather pouch into a bonfire to boost fire and produces frightening white smoke.

MacHale wrote the line "submitted for approval" as a nod to The Twilight Zone, where creator Rod Serling will, after introducing the episode, says "submitted for your approval." The storyteller will continue by announcing the title (The Tale of...). The theme of the story usually revolves around various paranormal phenomena, such as demons, ghosts, magic, haunted houses, magical curses, aliens, witches, vampires, werewolves, and the like that come into contact with the average teenager. Typically, episodes are filmed in the forest, in abandoned homes, or in public places such as schools or libraries. The sources of these stories vary in various ways; many of which are adaptations of public domain fairy tales and short stories or urban legends. For example, the episode "The Tale of Twisted Claw" is an adaptation of the short story W. W. Jacobs, The Monkey's Paw .

Sometimes, the stories are inspired by certain events in the storyteller's life. In the episode "The Tale of the Crimson Clown," for example, Tucker blackmailed his brother Gary with a poem he found, which Gary had written for Samantha. Gary then tells a story in which a naughty and mischievous younger brother is brutally punished for his evil deeds. At the end of the episode, Tucker returns the poem to his brother. Many, but not all, of the horror stories about Are You Afraid of the Dark? ends with "happy ending" while some of them have a bad ending or a tortuous ending like "The Tale of the Lonely" Ghost "," The Tale of the Dark Music "," The Tale of Vampire Town ", and" The Tale of the Pinball Wizard ".

At the end of most of the episodes, one character (usually Gary in the first run and Tucker in the second show) will throw a red water bucket into the fire, stating "I declare the Midnight Society meeting is closed", and the group will leave the camp, ending the story. Sometimes, the story will be related to an event (for example in "The Tale of Laughing in the Dark," a Christian, who is afraid of a clown, runs away when Eric is wearing a clown mask, then everyone goes after him). This will cause Gary or Tucker to immediately throw water into the fire, and the Midnight Society will go wherever they go after the meeting.

Character and transmit

A few years after the Midnight Society's last meeting, Tucker returned to resume the meeting, inviting his own circle of friends to reform the Midnight Society. Quinn: Quinn usually gets into trouble at school and at home, but he's a smart kid who likes to make fun of Andy working with Vange.

  • Vange: Vange (short for Evangeline) is the youngest of the New Midnight Society. He is a tomboy and has no problem with speaking his mind. Working with Quinn he mocks Andy.
  • Andy: Andy is very sweet and kind. He is always ridiculed by Quinn and Vange for having more muscle than the brain. He lives on a farm with his family. He often works there before and after school. Andy is closest to Megan.
  • Megan: Megan is the unfortunate rich kid in the woods. He prefers to hold New Midnight Society Meetings in his own backyard, well managed. Tucker, not being his brother's swindler, allowed Megan to update the bonfire with some comfortable old couches. He seems to have a weak spot for Andy.
  • Repeating character

One of the more significant recurring characters is Sardo (Richard Dumont), owner of "Sardo's Magic Mansion" (magic shop). He often tries to sell "valuable" characters, works almost every time. He often has items in his shop that contain real magic traits, but does not know until he is revealed in the story. One of the most memorable recurring jokes in the series happens when someone will call him "Mr. Sardo." He will then feel annoyed and exclaim: "That's SarDO! No mister, accent on doh!" Another recurring line is: "Have you ever seen our vomit?"

In addition, when selling goods to someone, he often asks for a rather high price. The main character will say how much money they have, and Sardo will take the money by saying, "But I lost the deal." Although he rarely gets what he wants, he will often help his character, often by accident. He appears in Gary's stories, though in later seasons, he appears in two Tucker and one of David in the episode "The Tale Of The Dark Dragon."

Other recurring characters are Dr. Vink (Aron Tager). He is a physically impressive man who often appears as a mad scientist, a shaman, and the like. When he entered, he introduced himself by saying, "Vink is a name, Dr. Vink." He would also make his name mispronounced, usually something like "Dr. Fink?" When this happens, he will answer "Vink With va-va-va !" Often, the protagonist will call it "nutbag" behind his back, assuming he can not hear it, just to reply later, "... and I'm not a nutbag."

Unlike Sardo, whose character is set in a magic shop, Dr. Vink has many 'unique endeavors' when he calls them, for his story. It ranges from staying deep within the forest doing strange natural experiments, being a retired film, owning his own restaurant as head chef and last barber. His activities are usually evil and are designed to put the character in danger and allow him the last laugh. However, in his last appearance, "The Tale of Cutter's Treasure" (told by Frank and Gary), he is allied with Sardo and the main character without his usual hate. He appears in Frank stories. Aron Tager also plays a carnival worker who stands in front of Funhouse and invites people to get into the episode "The Tale of the Laughing in the Dark".

The Zeebo the Clown character, also played by Tager, appears in "The Tale of the Laughing in the Dark" referenced in several other stories, for example, in the episode "The Tale of the Whispering Walls", two children mention seeing him in the park In the episode of "The Tale of the Mystical Mirror", a girl says she will look like Zeebo if she wears too much lipstick, and in the episode "The Tale of the Crimson Clown" in the boys video game room called Zeebo's Big House can be viewed on a table with a Zeebo image on it as a title character. The video game was also mentioned in the episode "The Tale of Train Magic." Finally, in the episode "The Tale of the Night Shift," a juvenile janitor called Zeebo by his boss several times early in the episode.

The villain, "Ghastly Grinner" (star of "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner"), like Zeebo the Clown, appears in a comic book that reads "Dark" characters. In "Tale of the Ghastly Grinner", The Grinner is featured as a comic book star. Christian Tessier who appeared in "Laughing in The Dark" (1992) also appeared in "The Curious Camera" (1994).
