The limbal ring is a dark circle around the iris. This is a dark color manifestation of the corneal limbus resulting from the optical properties of the area.
It has been suggested that the thickness of the limbal ring can be correlated with health or youth and may contribute to facial attractiveness. Some contact lenses are colored to simulate the limbal circle.
